Titans Punter Brett Kern Wants to Leave a Legacy By Jim Wyatt

AS BRETT KERN watched the NFL Draft in Nashville in April, it took him back to 2008. “It was kind of surreal,” the Titans punter said. “I remember draft day like it was yesterday, and just thinking: If I can get picked up by a team to try and play for maybe one or two years I’d be so thankful for that.” Kern wasn’t selected in the draft back then. Instead, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos. Halfway through his second NFL season, Kern was waived, and was claimed by the Titans. 4

Heading into the 2019 season, Kern reflected on just how far he’d come — while also looking at what’s ahead. “When I came to Nashville, after being cut, I never wanted to experience that feeling again,” he said. “I just knew that I was going to do whatever it took to keep my job, to work harder than the next guy to save my job and to try and play here as long as I can. Looking back from being not drafted and now going into my 12th year after just signing a new contract, it is just a huge blessing and I am thankful for it.”

Yes, Kern is still going strong. And he wants to keep going, and going. Kern is coming off his second straight Pro Bowl appearance, and this offseason he signed a new long-term deal with the team. Kern averaged 47.1 yards a punt in 2018, including a 41.7-yard net. He pinned 39 punts down inside the 20, with only three touchbacks. It followed a year when Kern led the NFL and set a franchise record in punting average (49.7) and net average (44.6), with 28 pinned down inside the 20 and only five touchbacks. The 49.7yard average ranked eighth in NFL history and was the highest of any player since 2012. Kern owns the top seven net punting seasons in franchise history and eight of the team’s top 10 net punting seasons. Kern used the first part of this offseason to relax his punting leg, while spending time with his family. The Grand Island, N.Y native, who grew up a Buffalo Bills fans, wants to keep improving. “I know I can always get better, really in everything that I do,” Kern said. “I go back and look at the directional punting that we do … and I look at my tendencies. I try and mix it up. I don’t want to be just going right or just going left. There’s always something I can get better at. If it’s trying to get a team inside the 7 or 8-yard line instead of last year it might have been at the 12-yard line, that would be an improvement. Four or five yards is really big, so there is always something I can get better at and improve upon going off of last year.” Kern said he feels blessed. After initially hoping he’d play a year or two in the NFL, he now sounds like a guy who’d love to play forever. “I feel great, being done with my 11th year,” Kern said. “I feel really good, my body feels good, I still feel like I have some really good pop in my leg and I feel like I am playing better than I ever have. “I just want to keep that going, and I want to be one of the best punters ever to punt in the NFL, be one of the best directional punters ever to play in the NFL. But also I want to be known as a great guy in the locker room, a man of faith, and have people know what I stand for: The family man and the husband that I am. I am just trying to leave a legacy, and I am going to play as long as the Lord allows me to play.” TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

“I HAVE BEEN THROUGH A LOT” Cancer Survivor David Quessenberry Makes Touchdown Catch for Titans By Jim Wyatt

TITANS TACKLE David Quessenberry beat cancer.

So, getting open and catching an NFL touchdown pass against the Colts was a piece of cake. “It was a simple route — any of the offensive linemen on this team could have caught that ball,” Quessenberry said after his memorable play. “I just happened to be the guy who had his number called on that play and was able to come down with it. All I was thinking was, ‘Don’t drop it.” Quessenberry didn’t drop it — he caught a one-yard touchdown pass thrown by quarterback Marcus Mariota in the team’s game against the Colts on September 15. What made the play so unique: Quessenberry is a 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle who hadn’t caught a pass since high school. He was lined up in the team’s jumbo package on the play, making him a tight end, and eligible to catch it. What made it so special: Quessenberry was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in June 2014 while with the Texans. His cancer went into remission after he completed radiation treatment in February 2015, and he completed his full treatment in April 2017, and returned to practice with the Texans. Quessenberry joined the Titans last year, and he made the team’s 53-man roster this season. “I have been through a lot, and it has been a long journey to get here,” Quessenberry said. “Even with all 22

of that, to go out there and score a touchdown, it is crazy. That was amazing. It was epic.” After making the catch, Quessenberry was swarmed by teammates. Mariota jumped into his arms as he held the ball above his head. “The ups and the downs and the rollercoaster that he has been a part of,” Mariota said of Quessenberry. “It was a pretty cool moment for him, and hopefully something he’ll remember and cherish for the rest of his life.” Titans coach Mike Vrabel was happy for Quessenberry. Vrabel was defensive coordinator with the Texans when Quessenberry was in Houston. “We’d like to have it help us win the game,” Vrabel said. “Dave is a valued member of this football team who can play multiple positions. He cares about the team. Every single day he’s into it on the sideline during the game. He executed the play and we were able to find him.” After the game, Quessenberry said the Titans worked on the play in practice several times. But in practice, Mariota never threw him the ball. This time, he found himself open – and he caught it. “I guess he just trusted me,” Quessenberry said with a smile. “But I don’t think I am switching positions any time soon. I enjoy being an o-lineman too much. But if my number gets called and they need me to play jumbo tight end, I am happy to do it.”

COMPETING FOR CHARITY Titans compete against Predators for charity at Music City Food and Wine Festival

WITH THE HELP of renowned chef Tim Love, Titans players competed against the Nashville Predators for charity at the Music City Food and Wine Festival. Love led Team Titans, with safety Kevin Byard and cornerback Logan Ryan competing in support of Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation, the Titans cornerback’s foundation dedicated to aiding the animal community with financial and educational resources (www.ryananimalfoundation.org). Chef Carla Hall led Team Preds, as defenseman Roman Josi and goalie Pekka Rinne competed on behalf of the Predators Foundation, which supports and builds philanthropic partnerships around Nashville. The two teams went head-to-head, challenged to create the ultimate game-winning meal. Nashville’s own Emmy Award-winning personality and GIFFT Wines partner, Kathie Lee Gifford emceed the spirited culinary showdown, featuring a star-studded panel of guest judges, as the Titans and Predators battled for important charities and bragging rights in the kitchen. “IT KIND OF REMINDS ME OF ALI AND FRAZIER” How Fierce Rivals Eddie George and Ray Lewis Became Close Friends, and How Steve McNair’s Death Created a Lifelong Bond By Jim Wyatt

THE GAME OF FOOTBALL PROVIDED

Eddie George and Ray Lewis so many reasons to dislike one another. Their teams were bitter rivals, and their individual battles were fierce. They crushed one another’s dreams, and each other’s bodies. And for years, they haunted one another in their sleep. But one night last month, the former Tennessee Titans running back and the Hall of Fame linebacker from the Baltimore Ravens held each other tight in a long embrace when they were reunited during an event at Arrington Vineyards. If they looked like great friends, well, it’s because they are. “I love you, man,” Lewis told George. “You’re my guy.” “I love you, too,” replied George, before turning to onlookers, and then back to Lewis. “I hate to admit it, but he’s phenomenal. This guy is phenomenal. There’s nothing that I won’t do for him.” Lewis and George. George and Lewis. They’re an unlikely pair, and they know it. 26

The two also have something else in common that’s made them even closer – they miss their friend Steve McNair, whose death in 2009 took their friendship to an entirely different level. George and Lewis first became acquaintances back in 1995, during an event in Los Angeles. They hit it off. A few years later, they were at a Pro Bowl together for the first time, and they began hanging out. George was impressed that Lewis waited patiently for over two hours at an event while he signed autographs. Few recognized Lewis, in his second NFL season at the time. But Lewis sat down in a chair and watched the popular Heisman Trophy winner mingle with his fans, at the time saying he had nowhere else to go after they’d arrived together. Not long after that, the two began squaring off in epic battles on the football field. Those would continue for years, and they oftentimes got ugly between the teams. Lewis called his rivalry with George the “best running back-linebacker battle in NFL history,” but he said it was never as bitter as it might’ve seemed between the two. There was never hate, or anything close to it.

TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

George Lewis.indd 26

10/1/19 1:29 PM

In fact, both agreed the head-to-head competition made them better. And through it all, they were able to build on their relationship. “It kind of reminds me of Ali and Frazier,” Lewis said of the former boxing greats, and his friendship with George. “We battled. And when we’d go out there, we would give a look to each other and be like, “Do you, and I’m going to do me.” George said he read Psalm 27 before one critical meeting vs. Lewis, and the Ravens. The Bible verse starts off with these words: “The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?” “I was very aware of Ray,” George said of Lewis. “He’s the fiercest competitor that I ever played against, and there was always so much respect. He played with a relentless spirit, and that’s how you have to match it. The moment you show fear, it’s over.” A 13-time Pro Bowl selection, Lewis was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and a Super Bowl MVP in his career, which spanned from 1996-2012. Lewis started 227 games in his career and was credited with eight 100-tackle seasons. George, who finished with 10,009 rushing yards from 1996-2003 with the Titans, squared off against Lewis and the Ravens in 16 games. George had two 100-yard games, and 973 rushing yards in his career against the Ravens, counting two postseason contests. One of the biggest plays in Lewis’ career came when he collided with George on a ball thrown his way during the 2000 season’s playoffs. Lewis ended up intercepting the pass, and he returned it for a touchdown. The score sealed Baltimore’s 24-10 AFC divisional playoff win over the Titans. Baltimore went on to win the Super Bowl that year. Another memorable encounter came during the 2003 season’s playoffs, when George continued to play after dislocating his shoulder. Wearing a restrictive harness, George gutted out an 88-yard rushing performance against the Ravens, and he ran through Lewis on the sideline on one memorable play. The two jawed at one another after the play. The Titans won that contest, and George believes that game helped cement his legacy. To this day, he’s still haunted by the playoff loss to the Ravens in 2000. He’s also bothered by knowing his buddy can say he knocked him out cold during a game in 1997. “He was my fiercest rival, and he caused me a lot of fits, a lot of heartache,” George said of Lewis. “One of the toughest losses that I ever had in my career was against Baltimore in 2000. But there’s a level of

respect that goes beyond the field. I respect him as a man and what he represents.” At George’s event, titled “Cigars, Cocktails, and Conversation,” the former NFL stars shared stories about their NFL careers during a week when George’s No. 27 jersey was retired at Nissan Stadium. On the same day, the Titans also honored McNair, the late Titans quarterback who later became teammates with Lewis in Baltimore. McNair’s No.9 jersey was also be retired. George and Lewis agreed the bond they developed during their playing careers had already grown strong before McNair joined the Ravens in 2006. When McNair was tragically killed in 2009, they grew closer. “Ali and Frazier, their relationship, they realized, yeah, we were great warriors,” Lewis said. “But it was another thing to be a brother that somebody could lean on when times got hard, because things got hard when Mac9 passed, and we had to come together. This little rivalry we had, it’s cute. But (Steve dying), that was real, and we needed one another, and Momma McNair needed us.” Lewis spoke at Steve McNair’s funeral. Since his death, Lewis said a week hasn’t gone by when he hasn’t called McNair’s mother. When discussing McNair last month, there was a point when it looked like Lewis was beginning to tear up. “My payback, Rest In Peace Steve, is momma McNair needs a call,” Lewis said. “If Steve knew we were this close, and he does because he’s looking down on us, he would be happy. But it’s his legacy I want to honor, by being there for his mom and his family. Not having him here is different. The day I got that call, life forever changed.” George and Lewis still have each other. The two talk regularly, and build each other up after so many years trying to beat each other down. Lewis said he thinks they’ll grow old together, but then he stops to remember McNair’s untimely death. “We all have to go, but to lose Steve that early, it still bothers me,” Lewis said. “But me and Eddie, we’re here for one another. I don’t think anyone knows how close we really are, and we have that bond. It’s a brotherhood.” Like Lewis, George only wishes McNair could enjoy life with them. “When Steve passed, Ray and I became tighter because of that,” George said. “It created a true bond that can’t be broken because we were all linked together. With Ray, when you think about it, it is phenomenal how our friendship has grown like it has. I respect him as a man and what he represents. There really is nothing that I won’t do for him.” TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE

Titans legends Steve McNair and Eddie George Have Jersey numbers 9 and 27 retired during halftime ceremony at Nissan Stadium IT WAS A SPECIAL DAY at Nissan Stadium during the team’s home opener against Indianapolis when franchise legends Steve McNair and Eddie George had their jersey numbers 9 and 27 retired at halftime. Former teammates served as the Honorary 12th Titans for the game, while Taj George, Eddie’s wife, performed the National Anthem prior to the game. “Steve and Eddie will be forever linked as two of the driving forces for our team in the late 90’s and early 2000’s,” Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said. “This is the highest honor that we can bestow on a Titans player, and both of them are deserving for their significant contributions to our franchise.” 28

TITANS TUESDAYS

Titans kick off 2019 ‘Titans Tuesday’ program by visiting middle school students, hospital patients SCHOOL VISIT

Titans running backs Derrick Henry, Dalyn Dawkins, David Fluellen and Dion Lewis Spoke to students at DuPont Hadley Middle School to educate them about the Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) program. Their message encouraged students to live active and healthy lifestyles by playing or exercising for at least 60 minutes each day, in addition to fueling up with healthy

foods such as low-fat and fat-free dairy. “It’s a great way to use our platform and encourage students to eat healthy and have a healthy lifestyle,” Henry said. “It helps them to know what’s good for them now and in the future to fuel their bodies and keep them going. I love cereal and chocolate milk. My grandmother used to tell me milk strengthens your bones and I believe in it.”

HOSPITAL VISIT

Titans offensive linemen Jack Conklin, Jamil Douglas, Dennis Kelly, Adam Pankey, David Quessenberry, Rodger Saffold and Aaron Stinnie visited heart and orthopaedic patients at Saint Thomas West Hospital with a mission to help brighten their day. “It gives you a great overwhelming, warm feeling to talk to the patients, see them light up and know you are making their day brighter,” said Saffold. “The conversations we have are awesome and fun. We laugh a lot!” TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

AMY ADAMS STRUNK Owner and Co-Chairman, Board of Directors

AMY ADAMS STRUNK assumed the role of controlling owner of the team in March 2015. She also serves as the co-chairman of the franchise’s Board of Directors. In her time as controlling owner Strunk has transformed the franchise through her vision, commitment and decisions that have set the team on an ascending trajectory. She hired Jon Robinson as General Manager and Mike Vrabel as head coach, while also installing Steve Underwood to the position of President and CEO. Additionally, she has annually committed significant resources to upgrade Nissan Stadium and the team’s practice facility, Saint Thomas Sports Park. Strunk also continues to grow the administrative staff for the franchise with significant additions across different departments. All those changes translated to success on the field as the Titans went from a threewin team in 2015, to 9-7 records in the past three campaigns and a playoff win at Kansas City in 2017. The playoff victory was the first for the franchise since 2003, and the three consecutive winning seasons are first in the “Titans” era (1999-present). In the spring of 2018, she collaborated with Nashville city officials to secure the 2019 NFL Draft for downtown Nashville. By any measure, the 2019 NFL Draft was 36

the most successful in NFL history, drawing a record 600,000 fans to downtown Nashville over the three-day event and setting television ratings records. The Draft resulted in $224 million in economic impact and $133 million in direct spending for the Tennessee economy, which were both NFL high-water marks. In June, Strunk was honored by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame as the “Tennessean of the Year,” for her role in bringing the NFL Draft to Nashville and her work to transform the franchise to a consistent winner. One of the daughters of Titans franchise founder K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr., Strunk was raised on football and is proud of her father’s role in founding the American Football League as well as the decades of leadership he provided not only to the Titans franchise, but also to the National Football League. Her goal is to build upon that legacy and establish the Titans as one of the league’s elite franchises. An independent businesswoman for more than 30 years, Strunk is the owner and president of both Kenada Farms and the Little River Oil and Gas Company. She has been significantly involved in the family’s farming and ranching businesses, including serving as the vice president of Bud Adams Ranches, Inc. These ventures pro-

vided her valuable knowledge about customer service as well as the opportunity to manage a diverse range of employees and business operations, and these experiences have shaped her management style. “I believe in hiring good people and letting them do their jobs,” said Strunk. “Everything should revolve around what’s best for the Titans and not around the owner. While I talk frequently with the leaders of the Titans as I do with all of our family’s companies, the people in our football operations need the control and latitude necessary to create an exciting and competitive team. “Our business staff needs the same freedom in order for our organization to reach its full potential and to continue to create a first-class fan experience at Nissan Stadium. Decisions will always be made based on what is the best for the team to reach our goals of becoming one of the elite franchises of the NFL and enriching the communities of Nashville and middle Tennessee. “Nashville is one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing cities in the nation with a very promising future,” said Strunk. “We are proud to be a part of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, and we want the Titans to be a leader in providing opportunities for people and businesses in the city and the region to achieve their dreams.” Engaged in the process of improving all aspects of the franchise, Strunk has the best interest of the football team and the fans on her mind as she makes her decisions. As evidence of that engagement, the Titans have become one of the best home teams in the NFL, posting a 16-4 home mark in the last 20 games leading into the 2019 season. In 2016, Strunk was appointed to the NFL’s Hall of Fame Committee. Her appointment continues a family legacy, as her father was a long-time member of the committee. Additionally, in 2017, Strunk was named to the Board of Trustees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 2018, she added an appointment to the NFL’s Super Bowl and Major Event Advisory Committee. A graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in history, Strunk is an avid horse enthusiast whose other interests include farming, ranching, tennis and a variety of other outdoor activities. She also served as a volunteer coach of both the boys and girls varsity tennis teams at her daughter’s high school. Never one to turn down a challenge, during the 2017 offseason, Strunk accepted an invitation to skydive with members of the Army’s Golden Knights to kick off draft week. Strunk is married to her husband Bill. She has three children — Tracy, Tommy, and Blanche, who are all avid sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts. TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

STEVE UNDERWOOD President and CEO

STEVE UNDERWOOD returned to the Titans on March 20, 2015 to serve as the team’s interim President and CEO, and had the interim tag removed in January of 2016. He now leads the franchise as the President and CEO. Underwood has four decades of experience in a number of roles with the franchise, including that of Senior Executive Vice President/General Counsel/COO at the time of his initial retirement in 2011. Prior to his initial retirement, Underwood assumed the position of Senior Executive Vice President, General Counsel in August of 2006 and moved from Houston to Nashville. He oversaw the organization in Nashville and 38

reported directly to the team owner, K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. Since he joined the franchise in 1991, he has served as General Counsel for the franchise. He also served as General Counsel for KSA Industries, Inc., the private holding company of Titans’ owner K. S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. Underwood was heavily involved in issues related to the franchise’s relocation to Tennessee, including his role as one of the Titans’ principal negotiators with local governments in Nashville, Memphis and Houston. Underwood raised five children, including daughters Christy, Melissa, Providence and Liberty, and son, Dennis, who passed away in 2011. Underwood and his wife, Frances, currently live in Nashville.

JON ROBINSON

Executive Vice President/General Manager JON ROBINSON enters his fourth season as the team’s general manager. He was hired in January of 2016 and was promoted in 2017 to executive vice president/general manager. Robinson’s work in his first three years helped the team go from three wins in the season prior to his arrival to three consecutive 9-7 seasons and a Divisional Round playoff finish following the 2017 campaign. He became the fifth general manager in franchise history to have the team in the playoffs within his first two full seasons. Robinson also is the only general manger during the “Titans” era (1999-present) to oversee three consecutive winning seasons. Robinson turned over 80 percent of the Titans roster in his first three years on the job. At the end of the 2018 campaign, 43 players on the club’s 53-man ros40

ter (81.1 percent) were added after Robinson arrived in Tennessee—27 free agents, two players acquired via trade, one waiver pickups and 13 draft picks. An additional nine players he acquired (six free agents, two draft picks and one waiver claim) ended 2018 on injured reserve. In 2019, Robinson added key veterans to bolster the roster, including five-time Pro Bowl OLB Cameron Wake, G Rodger Saffold and WR Adam Humphries. Additionally, he engineered a trade that brought QB Ryan Tannehill to the Titans from Miami. Robinson also was able to keep two key contributors on the roster, re-signing S Kenny Vaccaro and two-time Pro Bowl punter Brett Kern. On draft day, Robinson added Mississippi State DL Jeffery Simmons in the first round and Ole Miss WR A. J. Brown in the second round.

8/2/19 7:31 AM

Early in the 2018 unrestricted free agent signing period, Robinson targeted a pair of former New England Patriots: CB Malcolm Butler and RB Dion Lewis. During the 2018 NFL Draft, Robinson used trades to move up three times as he selected linebackers Rashaan Evans and Harold Landry. During the 2017 offseason, Robinson used free agency to address needs on defense and special teams. Most notably, he spearheaded deals for CB Logan Ryan (New England), S Johnathan Cyprien (Jacksonville) and special teams Pro Bowler Brynden Trawick (Oakland). In the 2017 NFL Draft, Robinson spent first-round picks on WR Corey Davis (fifth overall) and CB Adoree’ Jackson (18th overall). It marked the first time the franchise had a pair of first-round draft selections since 1987. Overall, the members of the 2017 draft class combined for 76 games played and 42 starts as rookies. In his first year as an NFL general manager, Robinson’s leadership and decision-making helped the Titans triple their win total from the previous season, finishing 9-7 in 2016 after a 3-13 finish in 2015. The six-win improvement tied for the most in franchise history (1967 and 1974) and doubled the previous club benchmark for the most wins in the first year under a new general manager (three by Bum Phillips in 1975). Within the first four months at his post, Robinson pulled the trigger on several key personnel decisions. On March 9, 2016, he made his first major acquisition, swapping fourth-round draft picks with the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for RB DeMarco Murray. The trade provided major dividends in 2016, as Murray led the AFC and ranked third in the NFL with 1,287 rushing yards. Around the same time, Robinson began to work the free agent market. Center Ben Jones and WR Rishard Matthews highlighted the haul, and both were instrumental in helping to transform the Titans offense into the 11th-ranked unit in the NFL in 2016. Jones started all 16 games and keyed a rushing attack that ranked third in the league, while Matthews set career highs with 65 receptions (tied for the team lead), a teamhigh 945 receiving yards and a team-high nine touchdown receptions. The latter number tied for sixth in the NFL and tied for ninth in franchise history. On April 14, 2016, two weeks before the NFL Draft, Robinson and the Titans dealt the first overall pick to the Los Angeles Rams in one of the biggest trades in recent NFL history. The Titans gave up the No. 1 pick and a fourth-rounder in order to receive the 15th overall pick, two second-rounders and a third-rounder in 2016, plus the Rams’ first- and third-round picks in TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

2017. From 1990–2015, there were seven trades involving the No. 1 overall pick, but this was the first since 2004, when the San Diego Chargers selected Eli Manning with the first pick and dealt his rights to the New York Giants. The Titans had their hands at one point or another on 17 selections in the 2016 draft due to five different trades (including one trade in 2015), and in the end, they ended up with a class of 10 players, including four of the top 45 picks. Robinson swung a draft-day trade with the Cleveland Browns to move back up to the eighth slot to choose Michigan State tackle Jack Conklin. All 10 members of Robinson’s first draft class played in at least one game in 2016. They accumulated a total of 110 games played and 38 starts, including 16 starts at right tackle by Conklin. The eighth-overall pick capped his successful rookie campaign by being named first-team All-Pro by Associated Press. Other rookies in 2016 who made significant contributions included second-round RB Derrick Henry, third-round S Kevin Byard and fifth-round WR Tajaé Sharpe. Byard earned first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl berth in his second season. Robinson arrived in Tennessee with a wide range of experience from working his way up on the personnel side of the NFL. From 2014–2015, he served as director of player personnel for the Buccaneers and oversaw both college and pro departments as the team rebuilt its roster. The 2015 Buccaneers draft class made a significant impact, including four rookie starters: QB Jam42

eis Winston, OT Donovan Smith, G Ali Marpet and LB Kwon Alexander. Prior to joining Tampa Bay, Robinson spent 12 years with the New England Patriots, including his last five years (2009-13) as the director of college scouting. In the five years heading up their college scouting, the Patriots added a number of key components to their roster that won the Super Bowl in 2014, including WR Julian Edelman, DB Devin McCourty, TE Rob Gronkowski, OT Nate Solder and DE Chandler Jones. He joined the Patriots as an area scout in 2002, a role he served for four seasons. Robinson then spent two years (2006-07) as a regional scout, before being promoted to assistant director of college scouting in 2008 and then director of college scouting in 2009. In his time scouting for the Patriots the team won 10 division titles, four conference titles and two Super Bowls (2003, 2004). Robinson played three years at Southeast Missouri State as a defensive lineman after starting his college career at the Air Force Academy. Following his college career as a player, he spent one season (1998) coaching at his alma mater and three years (1999-2001) coaching at Nicholls State. A native of Union City, Tenn., Robinson and his wife, Jaimie, have two daughters, Taylor and Bailey. He and his wife are deeply involved in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), as the disease affects their oldest daughter, Taylor. In 2018, the Robinsons chaired the JDRF Gala in Nashville which raised over 1.8 million dollars for diabetes research.

MIKE VRABEL Head Coach

MIKE VRABEL was hired as head coach of the Titans on Jan. 20, 2018. He became the 19th head coach in franchise history. In his first season as a head coach, Vrabel guided the Titans to a 9-7 record and to within one game of a playoff berth, all while navigating one of the NFL’s toughest schedules. The Titans played a league-high nine games during the regular season against seven eventual playoff teams, and their four wins against playoff clubs tied for the most in the league. Only New England, the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina had as many. The Titans committed only 82 penalties in 2018. Not only was that number the best in franchise history over a 16-game season, it was the lowest total by an NFL team since 2014. The Titans improved from having the 13th-ranked NFL defense in 2017 to an eighth-overall ranking in 2018 (333.4 yards allowed per game). They finished third in scoring defense at 18.9 points allowed per game, recording their best mark since 2008. The 2018 Titans defense also ranked second in the red zone 44

(44.7 touchdown percentage), 10th on third down (36.6 percent), sixth in passing defense (216.9 yards per game), second in touchdowns allowed (32) and first in fourth-quarter defense (65.9 yards per game). The 2018 Titans offense relied heavily upon a strong running attack. Averaging 126.4 rushing yards per game, the team upgraded from the NFL’s 15th-ranked rushing offense the year before he arrived to the seventh-ranked rushing attack in 2018. Vrabel ascended quickly to his position as a head coach following a 14-year playing career as a linebacker with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1997-2000), New England Patriots (2001-08) and Kansas City Chiefs (2009-10). He spent three years as an assistant coach at Ohio State (2011-13) and four years on the Houston Texans staff (2014-17), including 2017 as the defensive coordinator, before he was hired to his current post by Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. Vrabel’s accomplishments as a player included three Super Bowl wins (2001, 2003 and 2004), one Pro Bowl selection (2007) and an All-Pro honor (2007). He

appeared in 206 NFL games and totaled 57 sacks, 496 tackles, 11 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 20 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries. A cerebral and versatile athlete, he also saw action as a tight end and totaled 10 touchdown receptions. Additionally, his teams advanced to the playoffs eight times (20 postseason games), with Vrabel recording eight postseason sacks and two additional postseason touchdown receptions. Vrabel has spent his football life around accomplished leaders. After entering the NFL as a player in 1997, he played or coached under Bill Belichick, Bill Cowher, Romeo Crennel, Urban Meyer and Bill O’Brien. He gleaned attributes from each that helped form his philosophies as a head coach. Upon arriving in Tennessee, Vrabel stated: “We want to build a culture around winning, competitiveness and toughness. Everything we do is going to be geared towards winning and being physical. We want to prepare our players so they know what to do, which will allow them to play fast and aggressive.” Vrabel likewise made his own indelible impression on the same group of coaches. Upon the trade of Vrabel from the Patriots to the Chiefs in 2009, Belichick, who coached Vrabel his entire time in New England, made this comment: “Mike Vrabel epitomizes everything a coach could seek in a professional football player: toughness, intelligence, playmaking, leadership, versatility and consistency at the highest level. Behind the scenes, Mike’s wit and personality is one of the things we have all enjoyed about coming to work every day. The toughest aspect of my job is the day I stop coaching

people like Mike, who did everything in his power to contribute to team success. Of all the players I have coached in my career, there is nobody I enjoyed working with more than Mike.” Vrabel joined the Titans after four seasons with O’Brien at the Houston Texans, spending the first three seasons (2014-16) coaching linebackers and one year (2017) as the team’s defensive coordinator. During his time in Houston, the Texans built one of the top defenses in the NFL and experienced tremendous success as a team, earning division titles in 2015 and 2016. O’Brien had this to say on Vrabel: “When you are around guys like Mike you know that it is inevitable that he is going to be a head coach. He is a great leader, and he did an excellent job for us

developing players, coaching the defense. He is a very, very hard worker, and he has a really good presence about him. He cares about people, and he has a great family … When you walk into the room in front of a team, you have to have ‘it,’ and he’s got ‘it.’” In 2017, Vrabel’s first year as a defensive coordinator, the Texans finished the campaign with 19 players on injured reserve. Despite the setbacks, he led the defense to the fifth-best third-down percentage in the NFL and a franchise-record 3.97 yards per carry by opponents. Houston also had 18 different players record at least half a sack and 26 players tally at least one tackle for loss. As the Texans linebackers coach from 2014-16, Vrabel helped mold several top-notch performers TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

within his position group, including Jadeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus, Benardrick McKinney and Brian Cushing. During those three seasons, the Texans defense ranked third in the NFL in yards allowed per game (319.9) and net passing yards (218.4). Houston also ranked first in third-down defense (33.6 percent), fourth in opponent completion percentage (59.5) and sixth in points allowed per game (19.8). The 2016 Texans ranked number one in the NFL – for the first time in franchise history – in total defense, surrendering only 301.3 yards per game. The defense also gave up the fewest first downs (17.0) per game and second-fewest net passing yards (201.6) per game in the league. Clowney, Mercilus and McKinney all earned second-team All-Pro honors, while Clowney was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career after posting personal bests with 52 tackles, six sacks, 16 tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits. Mercilus led the team in sacks for the first time in his career with 7.5 quarterback takedowns and tied for the NFL lead with four defensive fumble recoveries. McKinney led the team with a career-high 129 tackles and became the second player in franchise history with over 100 tackles and five sacks in a season. The 2015 Texans had the top third-down defense in the NFL, allowing a 28.5 percent conversion rate, which was the lowest percentage in franchise history and the lowest by any NFL team since the 2003 Titans (27.7 percent). The 2015 defense also set a franchise mark with 45 sacks – 22.5 of which came from Vrabel’s linebacking corps. The 2015 squad also finished third in the NFL in net yards 46

(310.2) and net passing yards (210.4) allowed per game and tied for seventh in points allowed per game (19.6). Cushing’s 110 tackles led the linebacking corps and were the third-highest mark of his career. Mercilus enjoyed the best year of his career as he set a personal high with 12 sacks. Prior to joining the NFL coaching ranks, Vrabel transitioned immediately from an NFL player to college coach. He started as the linebacker coach at Ohio State in 2011 and coached the defensive line from 2012–2013. In 2012, the Buckeyes finished the season undefeated at 12-0, and Vrabel was named Big Ten Recruiter of the Year by ESPN.com. That same season, he coached four Ohio State

defensive linemen who were either drafted into the NFL or signed free agent contracts. Vrabel was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round (91st overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft after playing four years at Ohio State (1993-96). With the Buckeyes, he was a dominant performer, earning back-to-back All-American honors and becoming the first two-time winner of the Big Ten Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year Award (1995 and 1996). He graduated from Ohio State with a degree in exercise science. A native of Akron, Ohio, Vrabel attended Walsh Jesuit High School. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons: Tyler and Carter.

A MESSAGE FROM OWNERSHIP

DEAR FRIENDS, Giving back has always been important in our family. It is with great pride that we share with you some of the community events and initiatives in which we participated this year. We are proud of the overall impact our organization has made, and the following are a few of the highlights: • Launching We Stand For in support of our players and their causes and charities • Partnering with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association to bring the InSideOut Initiative to Tennessee, a model that works to shift the focus of high school athletics away from the current “win-at-all-costs” culture and re-define the role of interscholastic sports in the lives of students and communities • Through a shelter pet adoption campaign, helping the Nashville Humane Association clear their shelter for Christmas for the first time in their history On behalf of the Adams family and the entire Tennessee Titans organization, we would like to say thank you. Thank you to our fans, our partners and our community for the support we receive that allows us to enrich the quality of life within the areas we live and work. Titan Up!

As a part of our community outreach efforts, Titans players, cheerleaders and our mascot, TRAC, will make appearances for non-profit organizations, schools and civic functions based on their availability.

DONATIONS

Through the donation of autographed items for silent and live auctions, the Titans are able to support the fundraising efforts of hundreds of local charities and community organizations each year. We make every effort to accommodate as many requests as possible. TENNESSEE TITANS GAMEDAY

TENNESSEAN OF THE YEAR Titans Owner Amy Adams Strunk Honored as 2019 Tennessean of the Year by Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame

TITANS CONTROLLING OWNER Amy Adams Strunk received a standing ovation at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame banquet in June while being honored as the 2019 Tennessean of the Year. After a video played recognizing her work in the state – from helping bring the 2019 NFL Draft to Nashville to her generosity in the community to the resurgence of her football team – Strunk gave thanks to football fans in the state, stating she was honored to receive the award on a night when the 2019 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame class was inducted. The star-studded class included Kippy Brown, David Cutcliffe, Charles Davis, Kara Lawson, Peyton Manning, George Taliaferro, Bob Tillman, Kimberly Anne Valek and Patrick Willis. “I am just awed when I look at the inductees and what they did in their careers,” Strunk said. “I am just happy to be here and I’m so appreciative.” The Tennessean of the Year award “honors an individual or organization that has made significant 56

contributions to our society through sports or other methods, demonstrating strong character and high profile leadership.” The Tennessean of the Year award was first awarded by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. The award is not bestowed each year; only when people are deemed worthy.

NFL DRAFT A SMASHING SUCCESS IN NASHVILLE Sets Record with 600,000 Fans in Attendance, 47.5 Million Viewers WHEN THE 2019 NFL DRAFT was awarded to Nashville, it was expected to be a success in Music City. But no one could have predicted the record-setting week that was to come. The Draft easily shattered records for attendance, as over 600,000 fans filled the streets of Nashville for the three-day event. The NFL and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp announced it generated a record $133 million in direct spending -- a 79 percent increase over the $74 million at the 2018 Dallas event. The economic impact was another record-breaker at $224 million, also a 79 percent increase over the $125 million in 2018. In April, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell praised Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk for her role in bringing the 2019 NFL Draft to the city. “While I am proud to have been involved, the people of Tennessee were the true stars of the show and I want to thank every single person who touched the event,” Strunk said. “They say it takes a village, but this event, it took an amazing city and a great state to come together and throw one of the biggest parties in NFL history.” With a combined 3.9 HH TV rating and average of 6.1M TV and digital viewers, the 2019 NFL Draft was 58

the highest-rated and most-watched Draft ever, breaking records established just a year ago. In total, all NFL Draft telecasts combined to reach more than 47.5 million television viewers over the three-day event, up 5 percent vs. 2018. Many of those in Nashville not attending the NFL Draft in-person were watching from home, as the market combined for a 10.6 HH rating – up 104 percent versus Nashville last year, and up 74 percent versus the 2018 host city. “The 2019 NFL Draft was a tremendous continuation of the celebration of the NFL’s 100th season and an opportunity to welcome the next generation of stars,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Dramatic and emotional storylines played out in cities across the country with the energetic host city of Nashville serving as a breathtaking backdrop to hundreds of thousands of passionate fans who lined the streets and enjoyed a unique NFL Draft Experience. We congratulate our newest players and their families and thank the Tennessee Titans, the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp., the City of Nashville, the volunteers, and everyone who made the Draft such a memorable, entertaining, and successful experience.”

TITANS CARAVAN It’s All About Saying Thank You

THE TENNESSEE TITANS conduct an annual Caravan that travels throughout Tennessee, southern Kentucky and northern Alabama. We’ve visited nearly 400 cities in four states and made nearly 500 total stops. We’ve traveled more than 51,000 total miles and taken thousands of pictures. Our players have signed tens of thousands of autographs and shaken more than 250,000 hands at no cost to our fans. Why? Because we absolutely love our fans! That’s the story behind the long history of the Tennessee Titans Caravan. It’s about bringing the Tennessee Titans out to the fans of the mid-south to say thank you for your support.

SCHOOL VISITS

Titans Making Impact on Elementary and Middle School Students THE TITANS SCHOOL PROGRAM — implemented at both the middle and elementary school level — is focused on promoting the NFL’s PLAY 60 and Fuel Up to PLAY 60 campaign. During an assembly, Titans players share their personal story and the importance of making good choices, staying focused, making homework a priority before outside activities, staying in school, and listening to their parents and teachers. The players also stress the importance of healthy eating and leading an active lifestyle. Following the assembly, select students — nominated by their schools for leadership, grades and behavior — are invited to a special meet-and-greet opportunity. Tennessee State Parks began a partnership with the Titans school program in spring 2012 and has added further educational elements to the program that include displaying of bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, owls and other animals in the care of Tennessee State Park rangers. There are 54 state parks across Tennessee and any one of them is a great place to be active. Additional partners of the Titans school program include the State of Tennessee Department of Health, the American Heart Association and the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association. 66

Visits include the hospitals located in Davidson and Rutherford counties, where many patients are season ticket holders, making the moments even more special. Players also visit a 40-bed JCAHO-accredited nursing home in Hickman County, where senior adults receive extended care. Saint Thomas Health is a family of Tennessee hospitals and physician practices united by a single mission: to provide spiritually centered, holistic care that sustains and improves the health of the communities they serve. As a part of Ascension Health, the largest not-for-profit health care system in the United States, they are committed to healing and dedicated to service, especially to persons who are poor or needy, reflecting the spiritual core of their mission, vision and values. 68

LIVING UNITED

Titans, United Way Team Up for Community Initiatives TITAN UP FOR TOTS

A cornerstone community partner of the NFL and the Titans, United Way brings people and organizations together to create a community where individuals, families and neighborhoods thrive. The Titans and United Way of Metro Nashville teamed up to host the 5th Annual Titan Up for Tots Community Baby Shower in June. At team headquarters, players, coaches, staff and cheerleaders assembled 3,500 diaper bags to distribute to at-risk mothers throughout the Nashville community. A total of 10,000 diaper bags have been delivered since the inception of the event in 2015.

STUFF THE BUS

This year’s Stuff the Bus campaign provided 11,000 Metro Nashville public school students with brand new backpacks to start the school year off right. Prior to distributing the backpacks, close to 1,000 volunteers gathered at Nissan Stadium to fill the backpacks with brand new school supplies. Teachers at 14 schools also received boxes full of supplies for the school new year. 74

TITANS SPELLING BEE

Titans Host Regional Spelling Bee Annually at Nissan Stadium FORTY-EIGHT elementary and middle school students, along with more than 200 spectators, including parents, teachers and friends arrived at Nissan Stadium to compete in one of the nation’s oldest and most iconic competitions: the spelling bee. The fourth annual Tennessee Titans Regional Spelling Bee showcased the talents of the brightest students across 51 counties in middle and west Tennessee. More than 130 schools registered to participate in 2019. To qualify for the regional com-

petition, each student won their school-level spelling bee and also scored in the top 50 of an online, semi-final test that included both spelling and vocabulary questions. Competition was strong, with students correctly spelling words like: · Schipperke · Bobbejaan · Nachtmusik · Balalaika · Pfeffernuss Surviving 15 rounds and more than four grueling hours of competition, Jack Parker of Fred J Page Middle School in Franklin took first

place. Keller Smith of Huntingdon Middle School in west Tennessee placed second. As the top two spellers, both earned an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in late May. The competition is broken up into multiple days, with the final rounds aired live on ESPN. For more information on the national competition and to eventually see a list of the qualifying students from all 50 states and several territories, visit www. spellingbee.com. NISSAN STADIUM

Home of the Titans Since Inaugural 1999 Season ON JUNE 25, 2015, the Titans and Nissan North America announced the formation of a 20-year, exclusive naming-rights partnership that rebranded Nashville’s downtown stadium as Nissan Stadium. Nissan Stadium hosts all Titans home football games, Tennessee State University home football games, the Music City Bowl, international soccer games, concerts, the CMA Music Festival and numerous other events. The procurement of naming rights to Nissan Stadium fit the automotive company’s ‘Fewer, Bigger, Better’ marketing strategy, which has included ongoing sponsorships of NBC’s The Voice, the Heisman House college football program and a major advertising presence at the Super Bowl. Nissan is also known as the official automotive partner of the Tennessee Titans. Nissan’s ever-growing footprint in Tennessee includes vehicle and powertrain manufacturing facilities in Smyrna and Decherd respectively, along with its North American headquarters in Franklin. The Nissan Smyrna plant began operations in 1983 and employs more than 8,400 people. In 2014, the Smyrna plant assembled more than 648,000 vehicles, making it the highest volume automotive assem-

Nissan Stadium.indd 96

bly plant in North America. Nissan also has a major manufacturing presence in Canton, Miss., along with research and development groups in California, Arizona and Michigan. In total, the company employs more than 22,000 employees in the U.S. An important component of the Titans-Nissan partnership is assisting charitable organizations throughout Middle Tennessee in an array of community outreach programs. A centerpiece of this is the annual “Taste of Titans” charitable event, for which Nissan serves as presenting sponsor and which this year benefited the ALS Association, Tennessee Chapter. During the course of a 20-year relationship, a total of more than $1 million resulting from these annual events is anticipated to be distributed to local nonprofit organizations. Nissan Stadium is a city-owned venue that has housed the Titans since 1999. The naming rights agreement included the opportunity for Nissan branding on the exterior of the stadium, as well as stadium signage and other unique displays inside the stadium. LP Building Products previously held the naming rights to the stadium since 2006.

SAINT THOMAS SPORTS PARK Team Headquarters and Practice Facility of the Tennessee Titans

ON MAY 15, 1998, the team selected a 31-acre site at the MetroCenter complex in Nashville as the team’s permanent practice location. Since that time, a beautiful multimillion-dollar facility has been built by Nashville- based Powell Building Group on the property, located just north of downtown Nashville about five miles from Nissan Stadium. The team moved into the facility on Aug. 26, 1999, the day after training camp completed and the day before the first preseason game at Nissan Stadium. The 80,000-square-foot building contains a state-of-the-art locker room, weight rooms, a training room, cafeteria, broadcast studio, meeting rooms and offices for coaches, players and administrative staff. The building also features an auditorium with seating for 125 people, as well as other meeting rooms. Designed to exceed the standards of all previous training and practice facilities, the weight training center and rehabilitation treatment facility sets the model for all professional sports. The facility boasts three outdoor practice fields with natural grass, plus an enclosed field. Logistically, each field is identical to the playing surface at Nissan Stadium, from the 100-yard length to the geographic orientation. The longitudinal center of 98

each field is 24 degrees west of north, just like the field at Nissan Stadium, enabling the Titans to practice in the same slanting sunlight they face on Sundays. Powell, a leading builder in Middle Tennessee, was chosen for its state-of-the-art construction planning and building techniques. The facility occupies a beautiful site chosen from over 60 reviewed locations; a lakefront peninsula across from the Fountain Square commercial development located within a few miles from downtown Nashville.
