Michelle Yu Personal Real Estate Corporation discusses how real estate agents can be successful in today’s competition, while sharing her vision for a leading edge brokerage in Vancouver

The name Michelle Yu PREC*, Broker Owner of RE/MAX Real Estate Services, is synonymous with success when it comes to the real estate industry. With almost 30 years of experience behind her, and no sign of her slowing down ahead, Yu believes the time is right to actively expand her brokerage – but with a clear, new, modern vision. She seeks to create a legacy—to pass the baton if you will.

With multiple awards and accolades as a RE/MAX realtor, Yu’s brokerage has a long history in metro Vancouver. With an exciting move into Oakridge Park planned for late 2024, or early 2025, her AAA strata offices will be world-class and “create the perfect environment for realtors,” she says.

Please take note that, Yu is not looking for just any realtors. She is currently seeking professional real estate agents who are “likeminded and eager to learn.”

As Oakridge Park continues to be built as a state-of-the-art shopping, condo, entertainment, and workspace for at least this next year, it gives Yu time to find the right people to add to her brokerage. The location alone is a dangling carrot for any realtor, offering work-life balance, a central location ideal for clients, and of course the RE/MAX brand’s sterling reputation.

Yu understands the importance of staying current with the changing real estate market, and being equipped with high-tech systems; she also stresses that creating the perfect work environment is equally important. And, all that Oakridge Park offers, such as client valet parking, nearby green spaces, and SkyTrain access are all key elements to Yu’s ideal office.

Reflecting on her evolution from a novice to a thriving brokerage owner and acclaimed realtor, Yu divulges her keys to success in the dynamic real estate industry:

1. Strive for versatility; start by obtaining your real estate license and thoroughly

understand the real estate rules and regulations.

2. Familiarize yourself with various property types, and learn about how the age, style and character of a house impacts and dictates value.

3. Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the market and closely monitor interest rates.

4. Gain insights into different cultures, family dynamics, and clients’ unique housing needs.

5. Develop the ability to analyze figures of various property types so that you can offer better options and plans for buyers and sellers.

6. Know the market trends. Learn about price strategies, and how to develop marketing plans.

7. Learn the various forms of marketing and promotion tools available to create customized marketing plans for your clients, based on property characteristics and the target market.

8. Real estate agents expand beyond people skills. Become tech-savvy by acquiring knowledge in areas like artificial intelligence and social media, which are pivotal in today’s real estate industry.

9. Excel in public speaking, gain confidence and be able to communicate comfortably with your clients.

10. Every time you sell a property, remind yourself to help others who are less fortunate. Donate to charity, help in society.

“We welcome you to join us if you want to be well-rounded realtors,” Yu says. Yu’s willing to empower you with these skills if you are ready to accept the challenge.

Odlum Brown Limited

Over 100 years in business, Odlum Brown has grown to six locations, with more than 370 team members and over $18 billion in client assets.

To truly appreciate a century’s worth of excellence and unwavering commitment, some historical context is required.

Insulin is introduced to treat diabetes. The inaugural baseball game is played in the original Yankee Stadium. Time Magazine is born.

The year is 1923, and Odlum Brown, a B.C.-based full-service investment firm, begins with a mission statement that still endures today: to put clients first; to take care of team members; to protect – at times, fiercely – its independence; and to be synonymous with integrity, professionalism, and accountability.

Over the last 100 years, Odlum Brown has forged ahead through the Great Depression, the Second World War, the Great Financial Crisis, a global pandemic, and numerous financial interruptions spanning the entire planet.

Throughout it all, Odlum Brown has adapted, evolved, and established itself as a stable and trustworthy financial partner to individual investors and families across Canada.

“All of us at Odlum Brown have so much to be proud of when reflecting on our first 100 years,” says President and CEO Debra Doucette. “But, truthfully, it’s our future that really excites me. We’ve laid an incredible foundation on which to build, grow, and continue enhancing the client experience we provide.”

As clients of an independent firm, Odlum Brown clients can trust that all investment decisions are being made in their best interests. This independence enables Odlum Brown advisors to recommend investments that are truly suited to each

client’s objectives and risk tolerance.

And because Odlum Brown is a 100% employee-owned firm, its team members are personally invested in the success of the firm and its clients. This owner mentality goes a long way to aligning team members around the firm’s purpose to help clients achieve their financial goals, and to passionately contribute their efforts to that purpose every day.

“When markets or the economy are uncertain, there’s a lot to be said for that personal connection: being able to reach a real person, someone who knows you, on the other end of that phone or email,” Doucette says. “Knowing you have someone in your corner who’s been through it – this is what our advisors and our team members do so well.”

To put the effectiveness of this relationships-based approach into perspective, consider the findings of an independent survey conducted in 2022 that included more than 12,000 Odlum Brown clients. When asked about their experience, 97% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their Odlum Brown advisor.

“For over 30 years, I have depended on Odlum Brown for advice and safekeeping of my family’s nest egg,” says one longterm Odlum Brown client. “As my children are starting out on their adult financial journeys, they too have trusted Odlum Brown to start themselves off on a solid footing. My relationship with Odlum Brown has allowed me many nights of restful sleep and for that, I am grateful.”

Odlum Brown is an independent, full-service investment firm helping clients achieve their financial goals. Having been in business for 100 years, Odlum Brown has established itself as a trusted financial partner across B.C. and Canada.

When markets or the economy are uncertain, there’s a lot to be said for that personal connection: being able to reach a real person, someone who knows you, on the other end of that phone or email.

Dr. Aly Kanani

This Fraser Valley area orthodontist in Surrey and Langley keeps patients proudly smiling

“Iwanted to be that beacon of hope and bring back those genuine smiles,” says Dr. Aly Kanani, referring to why he chose the career he did. “Orthodontics was not just about aligning teeth for me; it was about restoring confidence and happiness in one’s life.”

In 2006, Dr. Kanani embarked on his journey as an orthodontist. “My passion for orthodontics sparked during my early academic years as well as being an orthodontic patient myself. Also, seeing close family and friends struggle with self-confidence due to misaligned teeth made me realize how a simple smile could profoundly impact one’s self-worth.”

The orthodontic teams at Guildford Orthodontic Centre and Langley Orthodontics, the two offices Dr. Kanani practices in, believe they change lives one smile at a time. The orthodontic offices have a strong focus on working with children and teens; Invisalign and clear braces are popular choices made by the parents who want to provide their kids the best and most comfortable options in ortho-care. The results are often so dramatic and positive for their children that those parents opt in for adult braces themselves.

Dr. Kanani has enjoyed his lengthy career, sharing in the success of corrective orthodontist care with his patients, and one particular past experience truly summed it all up, and reinforced that he indeed made the right career choice. “A few years ago, I had the privilege of treating a young teenager named Sarah,” he says. “She was exceptionally shy and would often cover her mouth while speaking, trying to hide

her misaligned teeth. Over the course of her treatment, not only did her teeth transform, but so did her personality.”

He went further to explain, “the day we removed her braces, she looked in the mirror and tears welled up in her eyes. She told me that she never imagined she’d feel this confident and beautiful. A few months later, she returned to my clinic, sharing a video of her participating in a school debate competition, speaking confidently in front of a large audience. Witnessing her metamorphosis from a reserved teenager to a self-assured young adult reassured me that I’m indeed in the right profession. It’s moments like these that truly underscore the impact we can have on individuals’ lives.”

Not only do orthodontics improve smiles, but they vastly improve dental health, which of course impacts our overall wellbeing, both physical and emotional. Confidence is boosted. Self-esteem is improved. And for parents of kids, the peace of mind that comes with knowing they made a choice for their kids that will impact them now, and as they grow into adults, is enormous.

“Every time a patient looks in the mirror after their treatment and breaks into a radiant, confident smile, I feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment,” says Dr. Kanani. “Knowing that I played a role in that transformation, not just aesthetically but emotionally, brings immense satisfaction. The joy and gratitude expressed by both children and adults, along with the heartfelt thanks from parents, is an emotion that’s truly unparalleled.”•

Winright Law

Pioneering a new way of practicing law, aiming to provide a better legal experience for their clients and their growing team

While the economics of freely spending money is under scrutiny in the post-COVID world, one’s legal needs are often viewed as a necessity. When push comes to shove, most people would rather have a lawyer in their corner than not.

Winston Kam, founder and principal of Winright Law, credits its firm’s mission “to lead, inspire and create a better legal experience” for both its clients and its team, as well as its business model, for their continued success in today’s economic climate.

Winright specializes in real estate, business, wills and estate planning. The firm also does both transactional work and litigation work in all those areas, a rare phenomenon in the legal world unless retaining a larger law firm in Vancouver.

Despite being a mid-size boutique law firm, Winright has always felt that practicing in both solicitor’s work as well as litigation has given them the ability to work with their clients in good times and bad times.

Winright Law differentiates itself by consistently taking a contrarian position to the traditional norms of the legal industry, opting to take a disruptive approach to the conventional law firm business model. Whereas the traditional law firm business model is built on charging their hourly rates from the get-go, Winright Law tries its best to provide clients with a valuebased approach that not only starts with the initial consultation, but continues throughout. Winright will assemble a team that best serves to meet its initial estimate on legal fees, combining lower-priced legal assistants and junior lawyers, with higherpriced senior lawyers overseeing, with price adjustments occurring as is needed to meet

client expectations.

While Kam is wary of making this an outright guarantee, he says he has gone the extra distance for their clients to ensure Winright’s legal fees provided sufficient value to justify their fees, a practice often ignored in the legal industry.

Kam justifies this business model, because he focuses on the firm’s mission and the human element of the work, considering the client as a person they could know or treat as a friend before examining their case, to develop strategies and solutions that align not only with their budget and goals, but also to meet their comfort level and peace of mind as top priorities.

This transcends into how Winright fosters a better work environment for its staff and team members, promoting a collaborative open office work space. Kam furthers this by telling their team continually, “Working as a lawyer can be stressful, but your work environment and the people you work with don’t have to be.”

This is perhaps why Winright celebrates various awards this year, including but not limited to Best Business Lawyers in Vancouver – by Three Best Rated, the Canadian Excellence Award plus the 4 Best Real Estate Lawyers in Vancouver [2023] –by The Best Vancouver, and most recently, Globe & Mail’s Top Growing Companies of 2023.

Accolades aside, even though appreciated by Kam and his team, it’s the day to day, and getting into the grit of what makes this law firm tick and how they can ‘win right’ for their clients that motivates them.

Freshmart

Beloved local East Vancouver supermarket celebrates 25 wonderful years serving the community

Lockdowns, supply-chain issues, and rising costs, small businesses have seen it all. And that’s just in the last few years.

Supermarket owners Darcey Houser and Garnet Vickers have been through all this and more as their independently owned store celebrates its impressive milestone 25th anniversary in East Vancouver. The store, formerly a SuperValu, has rebranded as FreshMart at its Il Mercato Mall location on Commercial Drive, offering the same quality service it’s always been known for.

When asked what it takes to stay in business this long, Houser made one element adamantly clear – community is key.

“We are the only full-service supermarket in the greater Vancouver area that is always open, and we have had that continuity for over 25 years,” he reveals. “At our store, we pride ourselves in being engaged with our community and are here to serve them.”

The Government of Canada estimates only 26.4% of small businesses in Canada survive up to 18 years, which makes long-standing fixtures of the community like FreshMart particularly rare. As the cost of rent continues to rise, many local businesses find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place, forced to sell or fold their business or look for ways to decrease their expenses, which often comes in the form of cutting jobs.

As a 24-hour supermarket with a 50-member staff, FreshMart, fortunately, still prioritizes putting its people first.

“While many of our competitors have gone to self-checkout, we have not, and we will continue to be full service for our customers,” says Houser. “We have been here for over 25 years and have had this philosophy the whole time”.

In addition to the expected and reliable supermarket offerings, FreshMart also offers its clientele a deli and a large

selection of ready-to-serve options made from scratch in-store. Its extensive produce selections are procured from several suppliers – many local – making FreshMart an ideal destination for shoppers of all varieties.

Unlike other supermarket chains that have centralized services to cut costs, FreshMart also employs six full-time meat cutters trained by Vickers.

Of course, you can’t simply keep staff and hope for the best. Sometimes, you have to get creative, which is why FreshMart provides dockside food delivery for over 100 tugboat vessels right from their store. This added business contributes to their ordering volume, increasing their buying power, keeping their products fresh, and keeping their inventory turning over.

Adhering to its grounded nature and generous values, it’s not just Freshmart’s products that are nourishing. Every dollar spent at FreshMart goes right back into the community, nourishing the local ties that have contributed to its ongoing success.

“We spend locally both with services and by carrying local products,” Houser explains. “We have local ownership, and the profits from our business stay in our community.”

FreshMart also supports a range of community initiatives, including East Van Men’s Soccer, Kids Futsal programs, Indigenous Canoe Paddlers, and Athletics for Kids.

Although things at FreshMart are going well, Houser and Vickers aren’t ready to get too comfortable quite yet.

“We operate in a very competitive market within close proximity to several corporate giants. If you are not competitive, this is not the business for you. If you are going to swim with the sharks, you better be a strong swimmer!”

Dashing Dogs Dental

All pet owners will agree that seeing their little companion smile can make their entire day. To ensure that all canines and felines continue to brighten the days of their owners, Dashing Dogs Dental believes it is important for every pet’s teeth to be well taken care of so they can keep on smiling.

For seven years, Seana Wade, owner of Dashing Dogs Dental, and her team have been committed to ensuring pets and their owners are all smiles with their pet teeth cleaning services.

After spending a few years in New Dehli, India to work on a massive franchise project, Wade moved back to Vancouver in 2015 and started her marketing and business development consulting services. While consulting, Wade was keen to start building her own professional brand through launching a new business venture that incorporated her passion and love for dogs and cats.

“I first started a full service dog grooming salon and supply store called Dashing Dawgs Grooming & Boutique in Downtown Vancouver,” says Wade. “A few weeks later, I decided I wanted to do more for pets and explored my options and aptitude within the pet space, and then Dashing Dogs Dental was born.”

The concept grew out of Wade’s belief that all pet owners should have access to more care for their pets. “We all want to give our pets the very best, but often, the mouth gets overlooked. We know how important it is for us to keep our own mouths healthy and free of dental disease, so it’s the exact same for our furry friends.”

“Our mission is to provide a comfortable teeth cleaning experience for pets and their humans alike. We want pets and pet parents to enjoy a lifetime of adventures together.”

Wade obtained aesthetic pet teeth cleaning training at the only vet taught, academically recognized, and accredited training program in the United States. The program focused specifically on no sedation pet teeth cleaning, a key service capability which sets Dashing Dogs Dental apart from the rest.

“We hand scale all surfaces of the pet’s teeth and underneath the gum-line free of tartar, plaque and calculus in about an hour,” Wade explains. “While traditional teeth cleaning services require anesthesia, we offer no sedation, and therefore, no resulting recovery time.”

Dashing Dogs Dental works closely with the College of Veterinarians of BC to stay on track with offering a service aligned with good quality pet care. As a testament to their dedicated and passionate work, Dashing Dogs Dental has earned hundreds of 5 star reviews where customers have shared their story about their experience with Dashing Dogs. “We approach pet care the way we would want to be treated. “It’s a simple formula, but we are so excited that others feel we meet and beat their expectations,” shares Wade.

Currently, Dashing Dogs Dental’s pet teeth cleaning services are offered at dozens of locations across Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the Okanagan, and the B.C. Interior, and they have big goals for expansion for the near future. “We would like to see our service offered in every community in B.C. and across the country. We have business partnerships on standby in other provinces that are just waiting for us to start.”

Additionally, Wade is focused on growing her Dashing Dogs Dental team with the best specialists. That said, attracting the right staff for their unique service offering can be challenging. “Many people love pets and think that working with pets sounds like a fun job. However, finding people that are deeply connected with pets is another story. We are exploring options for a licensing program in other provinces to help expand and attract the right employees.”

For Wade and her team, seeing the content and relieved looks on their patient’s faces makes the work they do all worthwhile. “The most satisfying part of our job is seeing in real-time, the dog or cat understanding what we are doing and how it is helping them,” says Wade. “The satisfaction of reading their body language on this intuitive level is an incredible feeling.”

Having a deep connection with our furry friends is key to our business success.

Sharpe Distillery

Launched in 2023, Sharpe Distillery crafts unique spirits using tried-andtrue methods and an eye towards innovation and experimentation, all with ingredients from their own backyard.

Launched just this year, Sharpe Distillery is the product of many years of hard work, fueled by a desire to honour the Sharpe family’s rich tradition and… legally ambiguous but ultimately awesome legacy in the surrounding area.

With a family history in Cawston that stretches back three generations, head distiller Tracy Sharpe, her husband CEJ Mussell, and Amy Jo Sharpe, who runs the bar and makes all the cocktails, founded Sharpe Distillery as a tribute to their Grandpa Jack Sharpe; a local legend who, in addition to being an all-around community character, was a tried-and-true old-timey bootlegger during prohibition in B.C.

And when it comes to alcohol, it doesn’t get much more historic than that.

Despite being steeped in this history, Sharpe Distillery is far from stuck in the past. With head distiller Tracy Sharpe at the helm, this female and indigenous-owned family distillery crafts unique spirits using tried-and-true methods and an eye toward innovation and experimentation. This includes a vast array of smooth-drinking high-quality spirits ranging from unaged rye whiskeys to botanical gins, and cherry vodkas – quite literally something for everyone.

The aforementioned unaged whiskey is distilled using B.C.-grown rye and water from the Similkameen River Valley. It’s

You can taste the history at this brand new, female and indigenous-owned distillery in B.C. 253 Beecroft

bold, sharp, and peppery, with notes of wet leather, vanilla, dried grasses, sagebrush, and a hint of sweetness from the grain. Alternatively, their Pisqu is a single distillation of Similkameen grape juice ferment. Aged in stainless for three months, it’s full of flavour with hints of honey while still remaining fruity and earthy. You can shop the distillery’s entire collection of premium spirits online.

You can also enjoy these spirits at the distillery’s welcoming tasting room, also located in Cawston, where you can surround yourself with breathtaking views of Similkameen Valley. Of course, you won’t just see the surrounding landscape, you’ll taste it too, as their diverse cocktail menu is heavily inspired by the local growing season and ingredient availability. It’s a great place to sit at the bar, share a drink with friends, or chat with someone new. Whatever the case, you’re sure to feel like part of the family while you’re there. The welcoming atmosphere is exactly why less than a year into operating, Sharpe Distillery has already been named Best Distillery, Best Happy Hour, and Best New Business by the 18th annual Best of the South Okanagan awards. Located just outside Keremeos, it’s a great place to visit during your fall travels and a fantastic travel destination in its own right too.

More than just another faceless whiskey brand, Sharpe Distillery invites you to belly up and become part of the family as you learn about an authentic history that runs as deep in the distilling industry as it does in the area where the product was made. •

Sharpe Distillery is now open. With a family history in Cawston that stretches back three generations, Sharpe Distillery crafts one-of-a-kind spirits that balance tradition and innovation in every sip.

We wanted to make a clean, high-quality spirit using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Another goal is to build a destination where everyone feels welcome, the same feeling we had growing up in Cawston

REW

A glimpse into the future

We believe that real estate should be one of life’s great adventures. We also believe that a more personal real estate experience can help people to navigate and master their own real estate adventures. This comes to life in great digital touchpoints and valuable content.

That’s REW. And that’s the adventure that our CREW, homeseekers, real estate professionals and partners set out on with us every day. Whether you’re buying, selling, investing, looking for a great agent or simply looking, we’ll help guide you no matter where this real estate adventure may take you.

Introducing REW Studio

When it comes to real estate content, Canadian homeseekers and agents alike have told us that they are drowning in a sea of sameness. But we believe that real estate should be one of life’s great adventures - and that the greatest adventures deserve the greatest stories. And that’s why our REW Studio creatives ingest far too much coffee each morning: to keep the same-same wallpaper inside the properties where it belongs, and produce original, compelling, painstakingly-crafted and truly human content and experiences that are impossible to forget.

Enter RealTours

This year, REW Studio was thrilled to launch our first original content series,

RealTours - a show dedicated to authentically showcasing Greater Vancouver’s top real estate agents and hottest markets. Hosted by Stephen Tadgh, an Irish filmmaker and content creator who lives in Vancouver, RealTours shows you Canadian real estate like you’ve never seen it before.

After a successful three-episode pilot in the summer, Season One premiered in September with an episode showcasing all North Vancouver has to offer, in partnership with top local realtor Mehdi Miar.

With new episodes launching weekly, homeseekers can explore Greater Vancouver’s most sought-after neighbourhoods through a universe of content hosted across REW.ca, social media, email newsletters and local news sites.

An Audience Hungry for Real Estate Content

The 14th and final episode of RealTours Season One will air in December but the series is already exceeding expectations. With over 14 million impressions and 1.5 million views (and counting), RealTours has filled a gap for homeseekers looking for high quality, entertaining and educational content about the Lower Mainland’s wild real estate market.

The three pilot episodes of Real Tours will premier this July on REW.ca with Season One of Real Tours dropping this September. •

REW isn’t in the real estate business - we’re in the business of building confidence. Building content to inspire and equip homeseekers for the ups and downs of their personal real estate adventure. That was what we set out to do with our inaugural, original series, RealTours. It’s been inspiring to watch the talented REW team and our extraordinary Agent partners bring it all to life!
