How did a small Estonian start-up become one of the fastest-growing tech companies with over 150 million customers and 3.5 million partners in 45 countries? One word: culture. Ever since Markus, Martin and Oliver created Bolt ten years ago, our operating principles have been guiding us along the way. So, to celebrate our 10th birthday, we made a video about them. 🟢 Customer first We optimise for long-term positive impact on the world, not just personal gains next quarter. That means always starting from the customer's needs and working backwards to find solutions. 🟢 Act like an owner We care about what’s best for the company, not only one team. Whenever we see problems outside of our area of responsibility, we speak up and try to help. 🟢 Be frugal We consider the impact of every resource we spend. That’s how we solve difficult problems with less than other companies spend on office perks. But when we identify opportunities that make a difference, we invest aggressively. 🟢 Extreme pragmatism We discard most opportunities to focus on what matters. We balance common sense and data to arrive at the right decisions. We don’t fool ourselves that we’re perfect and take critical feedback seriously. 🟢 We challenge each other but mean well The best solutions are found through intense, but respectful debate. We seek out people that can prove our arguments wrong, not simply confirm our beliefs. We give honest feedback to help people grow, but make sure they know we’re on their side. 🟢 We work hard and smart We take pride in pushing ourselves to achieve extraordinary things, but we know our true limits and when to take a break. We never put in hours just for the sake of hours. What matters is impact and if we find a shortcut to success, we go for it. 🟢 Be better, not different There is no point in reinventing the wheel if it works for us. But the opposite is also true — everybody else doing something doesn’t make it right. Where it matters, we think from first principles and create solutions that nobody has thought of before. 🟢 Short-term pessimism, long-term optimism We’re focused on existing problems and upcoming challenges in our daily work. But we remain highly optimistic that the future will be far better than the present. We just realise that to get there, we can never grow arrogant or take the trust of customers for granted. 🟢 Great people over complex processes We believe that the better people we have, the fewer processes we need. We empower our teams and give them the freedom to make decisions, keeping bureaucracy to a minimum. 🟢 Have fun! People perform best when surrounded by those they enjoy spending time with. People who raise others up, not put them down. We want to be a positive influence on those around us, by pushing them to achieve extraordinary things and giving praise whenever it’s due. Bolt Food just turned 5, so I’m out doing deliveries as a courier! 🚲 Our culture expects leaders to be in the details. I’ve always believed that to build the best products, you need to understand them deeply. For that there is no substitute for using them regularly – it always creates new ideas for improvement and gives me a renewed appreciation for our 2+ million partners. Big ups to our summer interns who took our HQ by storm! 18 Legal and Engineering interns joined us for 8 whirlwind weeks! Hey, I’m Aleksandra, a full-stack engineer at Bolt. 👋 When I first entered engineering, I noticed significantly fewer women than men. This made me wonder why that was the case and whether it would be harder for me to fit in or be treated equally in a male-dominated industry. Fortunately, I didn't encounter the challenges I feared, and I’m happy to see that at Bolt, we're actively working toward improving women's representation across various roles. 💚 My experience at Bolt so far I joined Bolt in 2023 and immediately received support and guidance from my colleagues.  My teammates often challenge and encourage me to tackle new and difficult tasks, which boosts my confidence as I complete them. What I enjoy at Bolt is the diverse range of perspectives our team brings, thanks to colleagues from various backgrounds. This diversity helps us approach situations from multiple angles, leading to better solutions. 🏢 Working in one of the coolest Bolt hubs I work from the Warsaw office—one of Bolt’s largest engineering hubs—where I have a chance to work side by side with fellow engineers. These interactions are invaluable for asking questions, socialising, and building stronger connections with colleagues. Poland is a key market for Bolt, with many new features and products being launched and tested here. This offers unique opportunities to participate in local initiatives, become a beta tester, and provide feedback to help improve our products. And have you seen the view from our office? It’s simply stunning! 💪 From limited options to limitless possibilities Growing up in a small Polish village, transport options were limited, with my bike being my primary mode of travel. Buses ran infrequently, making meeting up with friends or getting anywhere independently tricky, so my parents often had to drive me. Living in a city with various transport choices makes it empowering to select the best option for each situation. I’m proud to contribute to expanding these options, making them more accessible and efficient for everyone. And I’m excited about the potential to introduce even more transport modes, further enhancing people’s ability to travel freely. *** Every bigger journey begins with a small step! Real or cake? A rigid frame, 6 zippers, 2 side pockets, and 23 kg of vanilla buttercream cake for Bolt Food’s 5th birthday. When we asked cake artist Mona Tähtinen if she likes making hyper-realistic cakes, she answered, “Nope”. But then she added, “I don’t, but I enjoy a challenge. It forces me to solve problems I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise — in this case, how to add reflective stripes or zippers to a cake.
