Students for Humanity

On 21st February, we had the opportunity to host an event at Università Bocconi, where we explored the Afghanistan’s reality. Our guest speaker was Fatima Haidari, a refugee currently studying in Milan, forced to flee Afghanistan due to the arrival of Taliban. During the event, we delved into Fatima’s story; she had been Afghanistan's first female tour guide until the Taliban forced her to flee. Even today, as a student at Bocconi University, her heart and thoughts remain focused on her homeland. Furthermore, we examined how education had evolved since the era of the Taliban regime, focusing on their influence on the residents, and the role of women within the society. It was an inspiring and enlightening experience to gain understanding of the current reality of Afghanistan, through the perspective of a woman whose story is marked by inhumanity, but also passion, emotions and a desire for redemption. ITALIAN VERSION BELOW Il 21 febbraio abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di ospitare un evento presso l'Università Bocconi, dove è stata discussa la situazione corrente dell'Afghanistan. La nostra guest speaker Fatima Haidari è una rifugiata che attualmente studia a Milano, costretta a fuggire dall'Afghanistan in seguito dell'arrivo dei talebani. Durante l'evento, abbiamo approfondito la storia di Fatima; è stata la prima guida turistica donna dell'Afghanistan fino a quando i talebani l'hanno costretta a fuggire. Ad oggi, mentre è studentessa all'Università Bocconi, il suo cuore e i suoi pensieri rimangono concentrati verso il suo paese.  Abbiamo, inoltre, esaminato come l'istruzione si sia evoluta dall'era del regime talebano, concentrandoci sulla sua influenza sui residenti e sul ruolo delle donne all'interno della società.  È stata un'esperienza stimolante e illuminante che ha permesso di comprendere la realtà attuale dell'Afghanistan, attraverso la prospettiva di una donna la cui storia è segnata dalla disumanità, ma anche dalla passione, dalle emozioni e dal desiderio di redenzione.  Grazie alla nostra guest speaker e a tutti coloro che hanno partecipato all'evento!

On 9th October, we had the great opportunity, in collaboration with Associazione Res Ethica and Associazione Lumo , to host an event at Università Bocconi, discussing the perception of refugees in the west. During the event, we screened the award-winning short film “Pizza, Democracy and The Little Prince”. It shows a group of young Syrian refugees in Istanbul creating unexpected bonds with international students. Pizza, football and literature like "The Little Prince” help refugees to express themselves and transcend cultural barriers. It was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Professor Maurizio Del Conte, and featuring guest speakers Paolo Romano -regional councillor for the Region of Lombardia, Elena Horn - film-maker and documentarist, and Marcello Rossoni- Head of Milan UNHCR office. It was an inspiring and formative opportunity to explore perspectives from experts, promote empathy and get an interesting overview of the main current challenges on the vision of refugees in the west. ITALIAN VERSION BELOW Il 9 ottobre abbiamo avuto l’opportunità, in collaborazione con l'Associazione Res Ethica e Associazione Lumo, di ospitare un evento presso l’Università Bocconi, per discutere la percezione dei rifugiati in Occidente. Durante l'evento è stato proiettato il pluripremiato cortometraggio "Pizza, Democracy and The Little Prince". Il corto mostra un gruppo di giovani rifugiati siriani a Istanbul che creano legami inaspettati con studenti internazionali. Pizza, calcio e letteratura come "Il Piccolo Principe" aiutano i rifugiati a esprimersi e a superare le barriere culturali. È seguita una discussione moderata dal professor Maurizio del Conte, con la partecipazione degli ospiti Paolo Romano - consigliere regionale della Lombardia, Elena Horn - regista e documentarista, e Marcello Rossoni - responsabile dell'ufficio UNHCR di Milano. È stata un'occasione stimolante e formativa per osservare le prospettive di esperti, promuovere l'empatia e ottenere un'interessante visione delle principali sfide attuali sulla percezione dei rifugiati in Occidente.
