  • H-Ack Luxottica

    Hackaton @ H-Farm

The client (Luxottica) wanted a new way to take customers inside physical stores.
We developed a stand that, with augmented reality, tries to make suggestions concerning the "best" sunglass

We developed a loyalty app to digitalize the experience of the Italian Coffee Culture in the world. It allows customers to ask for “il solito” and have a personalized experience no matter where they are. Moreover it allows users to share a coffee (“Ti offro un caffè”) with a friend or a member of the community.

Because all the investments for this startup went in the hardware and in the development of the mobile application, the back-end part was built with no money for the cloud environment. To do so I used the free-tier of the AWS infrastructure, trying to adopt as many AWS products as possible, not to have many dedicated instances that would cost a lot.

Right now the application is structured as follows:

    - All the code is stored in two GitHub public repositories (one for the application server and one for the asynchronous workers) while the configuration parameters (database connection strings, private info, etc) are handled in environment variables of the build tool.
    - Whenever the code is pushed, the compilation starts on an external Continuous Integration tool: CircleCI.
    - The building phase consists in the download of all dependencies, unit testing, compilation of the Docker image, test of the Docker image via cURL, push of the image in the AWS ECR, deploy of the new image. If the push happened in the workers repository, the code is packaged and uploaded to AWS S3 and deploy on the AWS Lambda functions.

Right now I’m making a transition from a containerized architecture to a serverless one. This allows me to save money on the server instances and use the AWS build tool, CodePipeline and CodeBuild (the only reason I’m using CircleCI right now is its ability to compile Docker images out of the box). This is even better for my architecture since I can handle complex dependencies in the pipeline, make parallel tasks, and handle AWS Automation in a native way (mostly with CloudFormation).
