On the night of August 22-23, 1791, in Saint Domingue (now Haiti), an uprising began that played a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Every year on August 23, we commemorate this historic event. This day is a reminder of the tragedy of the slave trade and its impact on history. It encourages us to reflect on the causes, methods, and consequences of this dark chapter and to consider the lasting interactions between Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean. On August 22, 1864, twelve European states signed the First Geneva Convention to improve the conditions for wounded soldiers. Inspired by Henry Dunant, this document laid the groundwork for international humanitarian law, promoting universal care for all wounded soldiers and respect for medical personnel under the Red Cross emblem. The Geneva Conventions The four Geneva Conventions of 1949, along with the Additional Protocols of 1977 and 2005, form the heart of international humanitarian law, protecting those not involved in conflicts. Widespread Acceptance Today, these conventions are universally ratified and form part of customary international law. Historical Roots Henry Dunant, inspired by the Battle of Solferino in 1859, founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). On August 19, 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, took the lives of 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the General Assembly designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day (WHD) to honor their sacrifice. Each year, WHD unites global partners to advocate for the survival, well-being, and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. On August 14, 1941, after three days of secret meetings aboard warships off the coast of Newfoundland, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the Atlantic Charter. This pivotal document set forth eight foundational goals for the nations of the world, including the renunciation of aggression, the right to self-government, access to raw materials, freedom from want and fear, freedom of the seas, and disarmament of aggressor nations. By September, fifteen anti-Axis nations had signed the Charter. The Atlantic Charter became a cornerstone for the establishment of the United Nations, highlighting the importance of international collaboration and the immense diplomatic efforts required to create a new world order post-World War II. On August 9th, we celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Established by the UN in 1994, this day commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. Each year, UNESCO highlights the significance of indigenous communities and spreads awareness about their cultures. Indigenous peoples live in all regions of the world, occupying about 22% of the global land area. With a population of 370-500 million, they represent the majority of the world's cultural diversity and speak most of the nearly 7,000 languages. Despite this, many still face marginalization and human rights violations. The ideal profile shows strong motivation, an open mind, interest and curiosity for international topics and current issues in general, as well as a good level of English (the only official language at CWMUN ). We also strongly consider any previous international experience (eg Erasmus, year of study or research abroad, volunteering, internship in multicultural contexts), as well as membership of associations and NGOs.

On August 1, 1944, Anne Frank wrote her final diary entry. Three days later, she and her family were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.
