"Ceremony Held for the Final 10,000 Yen Note Printed with the Old Design" On July 3, a ceremony was held at the head office of the Bank of Japan where Kazuo Ueda, governor of the Bank of Japan, presented the final 10,000 yen note printed with the old design to Keio University President Kohei Itoh. Keio University had previously received the two other designs with the portrait of its founder, Yukichi Fukuzawa, printed on it―one from the 1984 series and the other from the 2004 series―from the Bank of Japan. Governor Ueda expressed his appreciation for Keio University's longstanding cooperation in publicizing the banknotes, such as through the commemorative exhibition of the second series of the 10,000 yen note featuring the portrait of Yukichi Fukuzawa. Governor Ueda then personally presented to President Itoh a 10,000 yen note with the serial number "ZE300000X" from the final production lot of the 2004 series. "President Tomoko Akane of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Delivers Lecture at Keio University" On June 12, Judge Tomoko Akane, president of the International Criminal Court (ICC), visited Keio University and signed, on the ICC's behalf, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Keio University and the ICC. The MoU is expected to create opportunities for practical guidance through the dispatch of Keio students as interns, as well as promote the exchange of expertise and experience between Keio faculty members and the ICC. In doing so, the agreement is also expected to expand opportunities for Keio students to work in international criminal justice and international organizations, and promote exchanges in research on international criminal law, criminal law, international law, international politics, international relations, and other related fields. "Keio University Ranked 60th Globally for SDG 16: THE University Impact Rankings 2024" On June 12, 2024, Keio University was ranked 60th in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2024 for Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, justice and strong institutions), making it 1st among Japanese universities for the second consecutive year. "Keio University Co-Hosts 'Danish Digitalization and Ethical Data Use' Symposium with the Royal Danish Embassy on the Responsible Use of AI" On April 22, Keio University and the Royal Danish Embassy co-hosted a symposium on Keio's Mita Campus titled "Danish Digitalization and Ethical Data Use." Speakers at this symposium included the Danish Minister for Digital Government and Gender Equality, Marie Bjerre, the Ambassador of Denmark to Japan, Peter Taksøe-Jensen, and other business representatives from Denmark. From the Japanese side, speakers included the Minister for Digital Transformation, Taro Kono, the mayor of Kitakyushu, Kazuhisa Takeuchi, the president of Keio University, Kohei Itoh, and Keio University's vice-president for Global Engagement, Motohiro Tsuchiya. "US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield Visits Keio University" On April 18, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, visited Keio University's Mita Campus and met with eleven students from the Graduate School of Science and Technology who are conducting research related to artificial intelligence (AI). Earlier this year, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution on March 21 about steering the use of AI technology. This effort was spearheaded by the United States and will have implications on the development and implementation of AI in over 120 countries and regions, including Japan, which were involved in the consensus. With this increasing focus around the globe on AI technology, Keio University announced on April 9 that it had formed a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University and other private corporations to coordinate research efforts connected to AI. "AIC Conference 2024 Held at Hiyoshi Campus Kyoseikan" On Thursday, March 7, the Keio AI and Advanced Programming Consortium (AIC) hosted the AIC Conference 2024 in the AIC Lounge and multi-purpose classroom on the second floor of the Kyoseikan on Hiyoshi Campus. Last December, AIC moved its base of operations from Yagami Campus to Hiyoshi Campus Kyoseikan with the establishment of the AIC Lounge and the Generative AI Lab, which will serve as a base for education and research related to AI. This conference, which also served as the formal unveiling of the AIC Lounge and the Generative AI Lab, aimed to discuss and share AI-related research initiatives, in both the humanities and the sciences, with people from within and beyond Keio University. "AY 2024 Undergraduate and Graduate Entrance Ceremonies Keio University welcomes 8,182 new students, which includes 6,407 undergraduate students and 1,775 graduate students" The Spring 2024 Undergraduate Entrance Ceremony was held on Monday, April 1, from 2 p.m., at the Hiyoshi Commemorative Hall. This spring, Keio University welcomed a total of 6,407 students into 10 undergraduate faculties, including students entering the Japanese Language Program. The ceremony was held jointly with all faculties, bringing together new students and Keio alumni marking the 50th anniversary since their graduation.
