The Kenya Institute of Primate Research is an AAALAC accredited and WHO collaborating Centre whose objective was to study monkey behavior so that it can give an insight into the behavior of early man. KIPRE’s functions have since expanded to include biomedical research, laboratory animal science and Conservation Biology.

  • KIPRE hosted the IPMB Workshop themed "Improving the capacity in biotechnology/ molecular biology of trainers to resolve challenges to the Kenyan Society". The participants were trained on both theoretic and hands-on practical knowledge and skills on various aspects of molecular biology. They are expected to disseminate this knowledge further in their own institutions/circles. The Women in STEM session themed "Closing the leaky pipeline: diversity and inclusion in STEM" provided insights on the challenges women face and how best they can navigate the STEM world.

  • 13-14th May 2024 KIPRE, through Conservation Biology Department, in collaboration with Re:wild held a workshop dubbed " Tana River Conservation Partners Strategic and Collaborative Planning Workshop". The focus was to engage and support conservation partners to save the threatened lower Tana Biodiversity. In partnership with other stakeholders, the discussions revolved around threats facing Tana River biodiversity, the gaps and mitigation measures to the threats . One of the recommendation was the formation of an alliance with a focus on achieving a common conservation goal in the region.

  • KIPRE had the honour to host Prof. Camilla Forsberg from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Prof Camilla gave an insightful presentation on hematopoietic stem cell function through the lifespan. She inspired researchers to further advance in HSCs research to seek understanding on the mechanisms underlying these changes in HSC function throughout the lifespan.This will be essential in addressing age related blood disorders, improving transplantation techniques and developing potential therapies for hematological conditions.

  • KIPRE's Dr Stanislaus Kivai together with Dr. Mohamed Omar (WRTIKenya), Catherine (IUCN), Dr Esther Kioko and Victor Wesonga (NMK) are the secretariat to the newly launched National IUCN Primate Specialist Group during the 1st Wildlife Scientific Conference. Dr Kivai who is also the East Africa Co-Chair of the global IUCN primate specialist committee will be offering primate expertise to the National group.
