A team from ODPC led by Head of Communications Dalton Mbondo held a training session with the call centre unit focused on the CRM Helpdesk tool. The training aimed to enhance the efficiency of issue reporting, ensuring that all raised concerns are addressed within the stipulated turnaround time (TAT) and that every escalation is tracked until resolution. Office of the Data Protection Commissioner partnered with The Debate Circle at the National Championships that brought over 1000 students from across different regions in the country. Candid conversations on emerging issues, data protection and privacy were part of the issues that the schools debated on. The office recognises the important role that youth within the school setup have in enhancing awareness and culture development and with particular emphasis on issues to do with data, this will guarantee a safer data environment for our society. Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, MBS has called for ethical considerations and adoption of principles of data protection when processing personal data using Artifical Intelligence systems whose adoption continues to surge. Speaking during the Law Society of Kenya Annual #LSKAnnualConference2024 at a plenary session on data protection considerations when incorporating Artificial Intelligence in legal practice, she acknowledged the various privacy challenges of using AI such as increased collection of personal data, lack of informed consent, and unauthorised use of data in pursuit of creating AI models. "Before commencing any data Processing activity, we should assess the connection between the data processing phase and AI and whether the personal data is processed with the scope of the data protection laws. It is important to ensure compliance with data subjects rights, implement technical and organisational safeguards and conduct Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIAs ) where necessary," she said. Earlier, the Deputy Data Commissioner Rose Mosero, HSC, FIP issued a presentation where she encouraged legal practitioners to uphold their role in leading their clients in embedding data protection in their governance structures. "We must be protectors of our client's interests and leaders in upholding Data Protection best practices., let us strive to fully understand the obligations of the organisations that we serve and what it is required as per the Data Protection Act"she said.

Maintaining data privacy begins with individual responsibility, especially regarding social media information sharing. The culture of data privacy requires collective effort from entities, individuals, and institutions like schools. The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner seeks more collaborations to promote data protection principles and privacy rights. Addressing University of Nairobi students during this years 2024 Kenya Music Festivals at Eldoret the Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, MBS emphasized on the role schools play in fostering a culture of data privacy among students.

At the National Music Festivals in Eldoret, we hosted Ogande Mixed Secondary School, who presented an outstanding performance of their chorale on The Importance of Data Privacy. The National Music Festival this year provided an ideal setting to raise awareness on the value of data privacy, encouraging organizations and individuals to adopt best practices for data protection, and fostering meaningful conversations about privacy-related issues.
