Working for an equitable and just world for women and girls.
About us
Utu Wetu (meaning “our collective humanity” or “our inherent dignity” in Kiswahili), co-founded by Christine Alai and Lydia Muthiani in 2018, is a think-tank and collective of women’s and girls’ human rights experts collaborating to enrich the landscape of legal advocacy, capacity enhancement, and movement building to advance women’s and girls’ human rights in Kenya, Africa and globally. We aim to achieve our vision and mission through survivor-centered and human-rights-based approaches to address various forms of gender-based violence and violations, which cause and perpetuate inequalities and discrimination against women and girls.

Women are not dying; they are being KILLED. By men, by silence, by a society that refuses to protect them. The blood of our sisters is in the hands of this broken system. MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE, REBBECA CHEPTEGEI #EndFemicideKe

Today, we convened to discuss innovative survivor-centered legal and advocacy strategies to ensure reparations for conflict-related sexual violence. We especially thank our partners, REDRESS, for supporting us in the fight for justice for survivors of petition 122/2013. We remain committed to finding more ways to ensure survivors receive reparations for the violations they endured during the 2007-2008 post-election violence.
