About

#DignifAI is a hashtag campaign created by users of 4chan's /pol/ board in which they use artificial intelligence tools to edit real pictures of women in provocative clothing to give them a more modest outfit and, if applicable, remove their tattoos. The trend began spreading on Twitter / X in February 2024.

Origin

On January 31st, 2024, an anon on 4chan's /pol/ board^[1] called for a campaign to use AI to edit pictures of provocatively dressed women online so that they are more clothed and fitting of a trad ideal of women. The anon wrote:

With the power of AI
we will clothe the instahots
we will purify them of their tattoos
we will liberate them of their piercings
we will lengthen their skirts
It will be nearly impossible to build counter narratives to this. We will piggy back off the outrage around AI porn and commit unrelenting psychological warfare to our own ends.
We will show them the lives they will never have. We will force them to gaze upon the image of true beauty, reclaimed from their own corrupted visage. We will bring decency back into the world, one seething roastie at a time.

That day, a Twitter account called @dignifAI^[2] began posting and replying to sexual pictures of women with AI-generated results to make their pictures more modest. Their first tweet gained over 70 retweets and 930 likes in one day (shown below).

Spread

Over the following two days, the hashtag #DignifAI continued to spread somewhat on Twitter as others joined in on the movement, though many tweets with the hashtag didn't see significant spread. On February 2nd, 2024, it got a large boost in visibility when it was tweeted about by Jack Posobiec, gaining over 3,500 retweets and 24,000 likes in a matter of hours^[3] (shown below).

Posobiec's tweet drew attention and discussion to the idea of using AI to clothe women. On February 2nd, Twitter user @bigboobsnoheart^[4] tweeted that the trend exemplified the drives by some to generate AI pornography and others to use AI to clothe women demonstrated male desire to control how women dress, gaining over 4,400 retweets and 22,000 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, left).

The same day, user @tsarlet2^[5] compared the movement to the Original vs. Un-Tumblrized controversy of 2017, which started after a /v/ user drew a less-clothed, skinnier and paler Fortnite character, saying it was "Un-Tumblrized," meaning more attractive and less politically correct. The tweet gained 19 likes in one hour (shown below, right).
