O diretor Marco Calvani lança, nesta sexta (17), o filme "A better half" no Provincetown International Film Festival, em Massachussetts, nos Estados Unidos. Namorado do ator Marco Pigossi, o italiano publicou, em seu site profissional, que a realização do curta faz parte do processo de cura de um abuso que sofreu quando mais novo.
" 'A better half' evolui através do que, de início, parece ser uma conversa normal entre dois homens. Mas seu poder está no subtexto, e a realidade dramática de sua interação só vem à tona no fim. O reconhecimento do espectador do que está acontecendo se dá ao mesmo tempo que a dos dois personagens, até que as expectativas iniciais sejam subvertidas. A história de Sean e Paul lida com o importante tópico do abuso sexual, mas não é sobre como ele se reflete na cultura atual. Trata-se do tema do incesto, que foi anulado por fortes tabus sociais. A história de Sean e Paul é uma versão ficcional da minha própria história. Em um momento em que a masculinidade tóxica está finalmente sendo examinada, me senti encorajado a abordar o trauma que sofri no início da minha vida e a conscientizar sobre o problema", escreveu Marco Calvani.

O diretor continua o depoimento afirmando que desenvolveu traumas após as violências que sofreu:
"O filme é minha tentativa de descobrir o segredo e a vergonha que carreguei por muito tempo. Realizá-lo foi extremamente catártico e empoderador. Para poder finalmente quebrar
o silêncio e o falso conforto da negação de forma criativa e pessoal - me permitiu
iniciar o processo de reconciliação e, eventualmente, encontrar um caminho para o perdão".

"'A better half' evolves through what on the surface appear to be a normal conversation between two men. But its power lies in the subtext, and the dramatic reality of their interaction is only revealed at the end. The viewer’s recognition of what is going on occurs at the same time as that of the two characters, until the initial expectations are eventually subverted.
The story of Sean and Paul deals with the important topic of sexual abuse but not how it is reflected in the current culture. It concerns the topic of incest, which has been quashed by strong social taboos. The story of Sean and Paul is a fictionalized version of my own story. At a time when toxic masculinity is finally being scrutinized, I felt encouraged to speak up
against the trauma I suffered in my early life and to create awareness of the problem and the human toll it takes. 'A better half' is my attempt to uncover the secrecy and the shame I carried for a very long time. Making the film has been extremely cathartic and empowering. To be able to finally break the silence and the false comfort of denial in a creative and personal way - allowed me to begin the process of reconciliation and eventually to find a path towards forgiveness. To share my story, to release 'A better half' in front of an audience, is truly the beginning of healing. Marco Calvani".
