We are pleased to announce that BKL, in collaboration with AMCHAM Korea, successfully co-hosted the seminar titled “Strategies for Responding to the National Assembly Audit” on August 27th. The event featured distinguished experts with extensive experience in Korean political affairs, who provided valuable insights into the current political landscape and strategies for handling National Assembly audits. Seokrim Choi from our Regulatory Group delivered a comprehensive analysis of audit response strategies. Additionally, a panel discussion with senior advisors Sukchun Kwon, Yongbok Cho, and Hyeong Woog Kim, alongside advisors Dongbeen Lee and Tae Seok Roh, offered an in-depth exploration of political trends and effective response strategies. The seminar was highly praised for its thorough content and practical insights and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated.

We are delighted to announce that Sung Kim, Senior Advisor at Bae, Kim & Lee LLC, has been honored with the George F. Kennan Award for Distinguished Public Service by the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP). This award highlights his remarkable contributions to U.S. foreign policy and national interests. Sung Kim made history as the first Korean-American to serve as U.S. Ambassador to three countries: the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia. He has also served as Special Representative for North Korea Policy and Special Envoy for the Six-Party Talks.   Earlier this year, he received the 2024 New American Hero Award from the American Korean Friendship Society, recognizing his efforts to elevate the status of Koreans in America. Since joining Bae, Kim & Lee LLC in January, he has led the Global Future Strategy Center, offering strategic advice to Korean companies on navigating global regulations and disputes.

On August 7th, BKL had the distinct honor of hosting His Excellency Enrique A. Manalo, Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, together with Ambassador Dizon-De Vega and their esteemed team. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the dialogue focused on enhancing economic cooperation between Korea and the Philippines. Secretary Manalo expressed optimism about increased Korean investment in the Philippines, driven by its robust economic growth, while BKL Managing Partner Joonki Yi reaffirmed BKL's commitment to supporting Korean companies as they expand into the Philippines. BKL data regulation experts authored the Korea chapter in Data Protection 2024, just published as part of the well-known International Comparative Legal Guides (ICLG) series. The up-to-date overview of Korea’s data regulation framework, centering on the Personal Information Protection Act, offers a concise guide to compliance in such areas as marketing uses of personal data, cross-border data transfers, data protection officer appointments, and incident reporting, with observations on latest enforcement trends.   BKL co-authors were Kwang Hyun Ryoo, Tae Uk Kang, Minwoon Yang and Hyoung Gyu Lee.
