The Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, M.D., was invited to a meeting on August 28, 2024, with the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Health, Representative Julie F. Wiah, and other members at the Capitol Building. The meeting aimed to familiarize the committee with NPHIL’s leadership and to receive a comprehensive update on the current monkeypox situation in Liberia. During the discussion, Dr. Nyan delivered an in-depth briefing on NPHIL’s preparedness and response strategies for the ongoing monkeypox outbreak. He also candidly addressed the various challenges the institution faces, including resource constraints and logistical hurdles, underscoring the need for strengthened collaboration and support. In response, Chairperson Hon. Announcing our newly appointed Deputy Director General for Administration: Dr. Lincoln is a distinguished Medical Doctor and Public Health Specialist with over 15 years of senior management experience across both the private and public sectors, at both national and international levels. He has spearheaded initiatives in capacity building, collaborative partnerships, evidence-based policy development, and program management. Throughout his career, Dr. Lincoln has been instrumental in managing critical health interventions during pivotal moments such as the Liberian civil crisis, the Ebola outbreak, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He has held international roles with the World Health Organization in countries including Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania, and also contributes to academia as a lecturer at the University of Liberia School of Public Health. With five (5) confirmed cases in Liberia and new cases emerging in neighboring countries, NPHIL is working closely with the Ministry of Health to activate response measures. The public is urged to follow preventive guidelines, including regular hand-washing, avoiding contact with suspected cases, and seeking medical attention if symptoms arise. Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan is a distinguished Liberian medical doctor, biomedical scientist, public health expert, inventor, and social activist, bringing over 25 years of accumulated experience in medicine, biomedical research, academia, and public health systems in the US, Africa, and globally. He holds a degree in medicine from the Medical Faculty of the Humboldt-University of Berlin, Germany. He has trained and worked as a biomedical scientist and public health specialist within the US public health system, including prestigious institutions such as the US National Institutes of Health, the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the Walter Reed Naval Hospital of the Naval Medical Research Center. Notably, Dr. Nyan is the inventor of the globally acclaimed Isothermal Multiplex Diagnostic Test for Infectious Diseases, commonly known as the “NYAN TEST,” which has revolutionized the diagnostic landscape for infectious diseases.
