Max McDee, 09 July 2024

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has launched its MY2025 Dolphin model and it's comes with a nice range bonus.

Prices remain unchanged, so the MY2025 Dolphin's base "Life" model, still starts at an attractive $13,700 (RMB 99,800). However it now features a 45 kWh battery pack, providing 261 miles of range according to the China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC).

For those seeking more range, the top-tier "Knight" edition, priced at $17,850 (RMB 129,800), packs a 60 kWh battery, going 323 miles on the same testing cycle.

These improvements are a substantial upgrade from the previous base model's 188 miles range. The new Dolphin also offers a more powerful motor in its "Knight" trim, boasting 150 kW output, compared to the previous 130 kW. We need to remember, though, that when it comes to the CLTC-rated range, the numbers are highly optimistic.

The interior also remains largely unchanged, featuring BYD's DiLink intelligent network connection and a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen.

The launch of the MY2025 Dolphin coincided with a significant milestone for BYD: the 700,000th Dolphin rolled off the production line.

Can BYD's claims about the range of the Dolphin be independently verified by third-party testing?

Don't forget, though, those range numbers are based on the China testing cycle, but still it's pretty impressive.
