HAUPIAA

Each month we spotlight an organization or individual at Berkeley. For this month, we are spotlighting HAUPIAA (Honoring Ancestry and Uniting Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans).


HAUPIAA’s mission is to educate the Cal Athletics community about the range of cultural diversity within the AAPI family and to celebrate AAPI accomplishments and culture with Cal student-athletes and staff.

The 2023 NOW Conference was a success! NOW is an all-day conference designed to support UC staff with career and professional development through inspiring keynote speakers, workshops, networking connections with peers, and career planning resources. Almost 1,000 people representing all the UC campuses attended the event in Oakland, CA, held the week of June 8, 2023. It was a great opportunity to Reconnect with colleagues, Recharge during the inspiring sessions, and Reimagine our career. Mark your calendar for next year’s NOW Conference on June 13, 2024. See you then!


Chancellor Carol Christ has announced her retirement, stepping down and retiring next summer at the end of June 2024. She outlined her plans for the year in her message to the campus community.

People Management in a Union Environment: July 6 | 9:00 am – 3:30 pm | #300A Warren Hall | This 5.5-hour in-person workshop is part of the BPM Part 2: Grow Your Knowledge series and is an elective option for the UC Systemwide People Management Certificate. In this highly interactive workshop, each participant’s experience is drawn upon for the learning. Ideally, to contribute to and enhance understanding, participants will come with current and/or previous people management experience.


Microsoft Excel Formulas and Functions: July 11 | 1:30 am – 2:30 pm | Zoom | This workshop is for UC Berkeley employees. This course describes the process by which calculations are created in Microsoft Excel workbooks. Emphasis is placed on the underlying theory and syntax of formulas and functions, as well as their complimentary abilities and use cases.


Delegation Skills: July 19 | 8:30 am – 12:30 pm | 300A Warren Hall | This 4-hour in-person workshop is part of the BPM Part 3: Grow Your Team series and is an elective option for the UC Systemwide People Management Certificate. In this highly interactive workshop, each participant’s experience is drawn upon for the learning. Ideally, to contribute to and enhance understanding, participants will come with current and/or previous people management experience.

WELLNESS

Taiji and Qigong: July 21 | 11:00 am – noon | UC Botanical Garden | Join us for a Friday late morning Integral Taiji & Qigong class. This class focuses on embodied, psycho-spiritual, ecological, and cosmological dimensions of qigong and taiji (tai chi). We will practice standing meditation, walking meditation, the Microcosmic Orbit, Taiji Ruler, the Eight Treasures, cleansing the internal organs, embodying the elements, and more. Everyone is invited to participate, regardless of prior experience.


Coping with Dementia: July 27 | 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm | Tang Center | Join us for a two-part series this summer aimed at taking a closer look at essential caregiver skills and coping tools for those caring for a loved one with dementia.

Sundown Cinema: July 21 | San Francisco | Free Film Screening in Crane Cove Park of Moana! As always, expect local food, drinks, music, themed pre-show entertainment, and film selections that celebrate the unique character and beauty of San Francisco and its parks!

Family/Social

First Friday Block Party: July 7 | 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm | Donkey & Goat Winery | On the first Friday of each month we gather with the community plus our neighbors Hammerling Wines and Broc Cellars in our dreamy Berkeley backyard to host a Block Party from 3–8 pm! Bottles and glasses of our delicious natural wines are available to purchase alongside inventive fares by local pop-ups. 


Summer Science Funday: Fun with Physics: July 8 | 11:00 am – 2:00 pm | The Lawrence Hall of Science | Investigate and experiment with the forces that govern our world, with activities from our hands-on Phenomenal Physics festival and GSK Science in the Summer™.


Summer Science Funday: Ice Cream Shake-Up: July 15 | 11:00 am – 2:00 pm | The Lawrence Hall of Science | On National Ice Cream Day, we celebrate the sweetest of the seven basic tastes, the one made possible by sugars. Make your own ice cream and learn about the science behind this tasty treat.

Social Justice

The Truth About Recycling: July 12 | 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm | Zoom | Celebrate Plastic Free July with The Ecology Center and other Alliance of Mission-Based Recyclers on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at 6 pm — Join a virtual watch party featuring our short film, “Chasing Arrows: The Truth About Recycling,” then stick around for an engaging panel discussion and live Q&A.

Staff Assembly Virtual Bingo: Every 3rd Thursday | 12:00 pm & 6:00 pm | Zoom | Join Staff UC-wide for some fun with colleagues! There will be two virtual sessions: A matinee session from 12-1:00 pm and the evening session from 6–7:30 pm. Bingo typically falls on the third Friday each month. The deadline to register is Thursday at 5:00 pm (the day before the event).
