Despite the achievements of SpaceX, including successful launches of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, Musk remains doubtful about the viability of a flourishing Martian colony within his lifetime.

In the recently published book "SpaceX: Elon Musk and the Final Frontier" by science journalist Brad Bergan, Musk's views on Mars are examined alongside various other topics. His apprehensions highlight the significant challenges that Mars colonization entails.

While reaching Mars may be achievable in the next few decades, the creation of a self-sustaining settlement presents a far more intricate challenge. Musk had previously estimated that the cost of relocating to Mars could range from $100,000 to $500,000 per individual.

However, these projections depend on substantial technological advancements and considerable reductions in launch expenses, which currently pose significant obstacles.

The financial and logistical demands of establishing a colony on Mars are staggering. Musk estimated in 2017 that the cost of transporting materials to Mars would be approximately $140,000 per ton. Considering inflation and other factors, this amount could increase significantly.

The construction of a viable settlement could require investments exceeding $100 billion, highlighting the immense difficulties involved. The combination of high costs and the necessity for major technological progress adds to the uncertainty surrounding the prospect of colonizing Mars.
