Good day! Could someone mark WikiWomen_Erasmus+_Project and all it's subpages for translation, please? Thanks! Theklan (talk) 12:55, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done. signed, Aafi (talk) 19:26, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Aafi! Could you mark all the subpages too? There are eight subpages there, marked with an image each. Thanks again. Theklan (talk) 11:45, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, the menu should be marked: Template:WikiWomen Erasmus+. thanks! Theklan (talk) 11:52, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Unsure why I missed sub-pages. Will do. ;) signed, Aafi (talk) 17:40, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't know why the template is not shown in other languages. Is this related to the translation? Theklan (talk) 21:05, 6 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Can someone, please, mark for translation all the subpages?
Thanks Theklan (talk) 08:40, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Living Heritage translations

[edit]

I had not worked on Living Heritage elements since the beginning of the year, and now that I checked on it, I had to revert several changes to make the pages function again.

@Pols12 I am returning pages transferred to subpages back to where they were. However, I noticed that this works somewhere, and found another reason for pages disappearing, so let's monitor the situation. I have not made the changes consistently across the pages yet.

The actual reason for the UNESCO list pages disappearing was a change someone had made in the data structure. This change was not well-grounded, and I must see that there will not be back-and-forth changes to it.

@Minorax I think the disappearance of the submenus was due to your changes in the Main navigation component. I reverted the change and now the submenus work again.

Sorry I had not noticed a discussion earlier this year about the pages.

Cheers, Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) 🦜 17:52, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry @Susannaanas, I posted on your talk page before seeing your message here. Thank you for having working on that issue and having open this discussion. 🙂 The issue does not come from /list subpage hack; I have restored Wiki Loves Living Heritage/Elements to demonstrate it does work.
However, the “Manually update list” link did not work from main pages, so I just have edited the template to make the link update /list subpage when it exists.
We need this hack, because there are too many pages which are too often edited by bot: that is polluting list of pages which need to be marked for translation.
By the way, please share the framework code you copy to create pages, because it contains some issues we may want to fix before pages are created. For example, it seems to miss the <languages/> bar. I also would like to integrate the /list subpage hack in that framework code and in your workflow to create pages.

@Susannaanas, what’s new? Can we re-apply /list subpage system? -- Pols12 (talk) 19:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Using the Language selector to switch language of translatable pages

[edit]

Greetings,

Translatable pages allow contents such as project documentation on Mediawiki.org to be multilingual. Currently a flat list with all languages in which the content is available is listed above the page contents. As the content is translated into more languages, this makes it hard for users to find the content in their language (they have to scan a long list or rely on the browser search), clutters the page, and pushes the content down.

To address this issue, the Language and Product Localization team is implementing a change to use the Language selector from ULS for language selection on Vector 2022. This aims to ensure consistency with the way languages are selected on other projects, such as Wikipedia.

Specifically, the configuration option ($wgPageTranslationLanguageList = 'sidebar-only';) that we are planning to use would display languages as interlanguage links only and ignore the tag even if present on the page. You can see this in action on translatewiki.net:

  1. Vector 2022: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector-2022
  2. Timeless: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=timeless
  3. Vector legacy: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector

We’re planning to enable this on Test Wikipedia first, and then roll-out on all wikis where Translate extension is enabled based on community feedback. Feel free to leave your feedback here, or on the Phabricator task.

FAQ

[edit]

Q: Why are we making this change?

A: Currently a flat list of all languages to which the page is translated is displayed at the top of page contents. As the content is translated into more languages, this makes it hard for users to find the content in their language (they have to scan a long list or rely on the browser search), clutters the page, and pushes the content down. Using the Language selector from ULS, makes the available language list searchable and clears up the top of the page to display the actual content. It also brings uniformity to how content language selection is done across our sites.

Q: Will I still be able to see the translation progress for each language?

A: Yes, translation statistics for each language will be displayed within circles in the same manner that it is displayed currently. The special page Special:MessageGroupStats can also be used to view per language translation statistics.

Q: Where can I see this in action?

A: This change is already active on translatewiki.net. You can see it in action there:

  1. Vector 2022: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector-2022
  2. Timeless: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=timeless
  3. Vector legacy: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector

Q: How will this change affect the ULS for other projects like Wikipedia? Currently, the ULS in Wikipedia shows and links to Wikipedias that have the translated version of the same article in other languages. How will this new workflow affect the Wikipedia User Interface?

A: This change will not have any impact on projects that do not use the Translate extension and as such Wikipedia and its sister sites will not be impacted.

Q: This new ULS menu design shows 20 languages before scrolling. Does it mean I have to scroll and skim through maybe 90 languages to access my language if it is the last on the list?

A: No, you won't have to scroll all the way. You can type the two or three letters of your language in the Universal Language Selector for the search to fetch your language translation.

In addition, the Universal Language Selector uses different techniques to determine which languages will be most relevant to you, and displays those at the top.

Q: What is the roll-out plan?

A: We’re planning to enable this on Test Wikipedia first, followed by MediaWiki.org and then roll-out on all wikis where the Translate extension is enabled.

Thanks! APatro (WMF) (talk) 13:14, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @APatro (WMF) thanks for the change, sounds great!
How will the language selection deal with pages, which exists locally in many different translations, but currently also link to versions of this page on other projects?
Example: There are many translations of No open proxies (e.g. No open proxies/de), but the VE2022 language selection currently links to Wikipedia versions of that page (e.g. de:WP:Keine offenen Proxys). Johannnes89 (talk) 14:06, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your feedback, Johannes.
I was not aware of this use case. This will have to be handled differently, not something that I had considered. I'll check with team.
Regards, APatro (WMF) (talk) 09:46, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think we may remove Meta-Wiki from Wikipedia “pool”: English Wikipedia is already linked in “In other projects” section from Tools menu. As an improvement, we can link French Wikipedia in the same place when we are reading French translation (e.g. No_open_proxies/fr), and so on.
The current design (both ULS for Wikipedia links and language bar for local translations) do has been confusing anyway. Let’s go ahead removing that dubious feature. Pols12 (talk) 23:38, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, thanks for your work! Perhaps adding a notice at the top of the page to remind users of this UI change (similar to the Vector 2022 one) would be helpful? SCP-2000 15:29, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's a good idea! Regards, APatro (WMF) (talk) 09:42, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Request for assistance/checking

[edit]

I have no idea if I've broken something or not...but I was trying to null-edit Translations:Wikimedia Bangladesh/Responsibilities/4/sv, and ended up doing this instead. When I then undid that edit (assuming it was a mistake, as I'd only intended to null-edit the page), it seems I also caused this to happen.

At this point I don't want to do anything more in case I accidentally break anything further, so I'd greatly appreciate it if someone with more knowledge about translations than me could take a look and fix anything that I might have broken. All the best, and apologies for causing problems! ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 21:41, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Inserting !!FUZZY!! on a translation page [1] causes the translated text to appear in a wrapper [2], marking it as not fully translated – which is correct in this Swedish translation, because some of the links are wrong and all of them are labelled as members, instead of mentioning roles like president etc. Johannnes89 (talk) 06:38, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions, opinions

[edit]

Hello fellow T-admins, I am attending the upcoming Wikimedia Technology Summit in Hyderbad, scheduled to take place in the first week of October. I have submitted a basic/medium workshop proposal around Translation administration which is available at WTS 2024/Submissions/Multiple languages & Internationalisation: Translation Administration on Wikimedia projects. I would appreciate any suggestions/opinions. Kind regards. signed, Aafi (talk) 13:01, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Aafi: you're very welcome to get inspired from and reuse the materials for the workshop I gave at Wikimania 2024! You'll find the Google slides here (you can duplicate the doc or download a local version to edit as you please). Good luck with the workshop and thanks for spreading information about the translate extension! Auregann (talk) 07:09, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
