The lake itself spans 17.88 acres and links to the Oxford Canal and Wolvercote Mill Stream via the Duke?s Cut. The sale has an ?overage? for a period of 25 years from the date of completion, with renewable energy programmes and conservation enhancement excluded, as reported on Luxury Property News. And, if planning permission is granted for any use, 20% of the rise in value will be payable to the seller. But, buyers won't be able to control the boats that currently adorn the lake, despite the lake being sold as vacant. So, if you fancy getting your hands on your own lake to practice your boating skills - this could be the one for you. Just beware that it will be sold subject to the benefit of rights including water and electricity supplies. Plus, the vendor will reserve a right of way to the boat lift that is adjacent. ENDS
Sick of the swimming pool? Why not buy your own lake! (Picture: Jam Press/Carter Jonas Rural)

As summer ramps up, a dip in the pool (or even an open water swimming experience) seems all the more essential.

But if you’re in search of your very own private dip, a ‘rare’ opportunity to purchase a private lake has arisen – and it’s less than 2 hours away from London.

Nestled in the village of Wolvercote, just shy of Oxford, the opulently-named Duke’s Lake is up for sale for a relatively modest price of £100,000.

Sure, it’s not a place on the hugely competitive beast that is the UK housing market, but a little rowing boat to top off your own body of water is no mean feat, right?

But it’s not just the lake you’ll be vying for: the price tag also comes with a block of agricultural land (30.8 acres when combined with the lake, to be precise). The body of water itself is 12.95 acres, with the rest comprised of luscious green space.

The lake is framed by two waterways (Picture: Jam Press/Carter Jonas Rural)

And if you’re passionate about all things river and stream related, it’s framed by two waterways: the Duke’s Cut and Wolvercote Mill Stream, which connects up to the Thames.

Not sure whether to commit? This is a relatively scarce opportunity.

‘A lake like this comes up fairly rarely,’ Carter Jonas agent Charlie Bott told the Evening Standard. ‘Around Oxford, it’s even rarer.’

Still need to commute into the Big Smoke? You’re in luck, for Wolvercote itself is just under 2 hours into central London by car – 1 hour and 48 minutes, to be precise.

By train, there’s a direct line from Oxford into either London Paddington or Marylebone. Trains can take anywhere between 53 minutes to 1 hour and 22 minutes.

The lake is located to the north of the quaint historical city of Oxford, three miles from Oxford station and just outside the Oxford ring road.

The land itself is found just off the Northern Bypass Road, and is approximately half a mile from the Pear Tree roundabout.

With world-famous museums and a blossoming culinary scene, Oxford is more than just a university city.

There’s an array of fascinating artifacts to be found at the Ashmolean Museum, as well as the Pitt Rivers (housed inside the Museum of Natural History and showcasing everything from reindeer knickers to mummified cats).

There’s also the stunning Port Meadow, which fills up in the summer with picnics galore. It crosses with the Thames, too, in case you wanted to explore it by boat.

And the pub scene in Oxford is unrivalled, with spots including the Grade II listed Turf Tavern – famously frequented by Bill Clinton as a young student, as well as being the location where former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke set a world record for downing a yard of ale in an impressive 11 seconds.

This ‘rare’ private island could be yours for less than £100,000 — and it’s not far from London

Elsewhere, if you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, a private island recently went up for sale in Berkshire.

Found on the River Thames – near Bisham, to be specific – is the idyllic Temple Weir Island, up for sale for £75,000. All things considered, that’s not too bad for an entire private island.

Measuring approximately 2,000 square feet (around the size of a family home), the space was previously used for mooring and private fishing and includes a small underwater sandbank. Bougie or what?

Next door, there are two islands connected to the mainland. One has a few houses and a private marina, and the other is connected to Temple Lock and Weir.

This particular island, described as a ‘rare’ opportunity by Savills property agent Richard Maby, is nestled between the two of them.

Interested? Temple Weir Island will be sold through a bidding process, and if you’d like to submit an offer, you’ll need to do so before midday on Friday July 5.
