Oscar-winning British actress Julie Christie has been spotted on a rare outing with her husband Duncan Campbell.

The Don’t Look Now star’s last known public appearance was in 2016 when she popped into her local dry cleaners in east London after retiring from the limelight.

The 84-year-old has now been seen again holding hands with her journalist husband, 80, in the capital, looking chic in a light blue shirt and navy cargo trousers paired with a red scarf.

Julie was also wheeling a red suitcase as she paid a visit to her dry cleaners and was later seen emerging from the shop clutching a brown paper bag, smiling at onlookers.

The Harry Potter actress has kept a low profile since soaring to fame in the 60s after her breakthrough role in the comedy-drama film Billy Liar in 1963 alongside Tom Courtenay.

Just two years later she cemented herself as a Hollywood star when she won the Oscar for best actress in Darling and appeared in one of the highest-grossing films of all time, Doctor Zhivago.

She also received Academy Award nominations for McCabe, Mr & Mrs Miller, Afterglow and Away From Her.

Julie’s other well-known film roles include Far From the Madding Crowd, Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait.

She also starred in Don’t Look Now, alongside the late Donald Sutherland, which features one of British cinema’s most notorious sex scenes.

The critically acclaimed 1973 film, based on a Daphne du Maurier short story, sparked controversy with its intimate scene involving Sutherland and Julie, as many believed it to be real.

In an interview with Film4, Julie rubbished the rumours and said it was nothing more than ‘pretend sex’ that left her and Sutherland ‘dreadfully embarrassed.’

Her most recent credits include Finding Neverland, Troy and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Julie’s last role in a film was the narrator in 2017’s The Bookshop.

During the height of her career, Julie lived in California but after turned her back on LA to live on a farm in Wales and in London for a more down-to-earth lifestyle.

In 2015, Julie spoke of her dislike of Hollywood, telling the Daily Express: ‘Hollywood was against everything I had been brought up to appreciate. My late mother Rosemary was wise and frugal, quite austere. She was conscious about the environment, even in those days.

‘I always hang up my washing outside or even on a pulley. It’s a complete waste of energy to use dryers. My mother’s hate of waste has filtered down to me probably because I was a war baby. There was no waste in the war was there? Everyone had to make do with what they had got.

‘I can’t even talk about waste without being indignant. My introduction to Hollywood was a society which used it, sniffed it and threw it away. We have become a bit like that ourselves in Britain. There is an attitude among successful people of spend and spend, flaunt and flaunt and don’t think of anyone else.

‘The world of celebrity didn’t mean a single thing to my mum. Her attitude filtered down to me, which is why I take all the celeb stuff with a pinch of salt.’

Julie dated huge Hollywood stars Terence Stamp and Warren Beatty, and was also romantically linked to musician Brian Eno, record producer Lou Adler, director Jim McBride and photographer Terry O’Neill.

She has been in a relationship with her husband Duncan, a former crime reporter for The Guardian and an author, since the late 70s. They are married but have never publically revealed when they tied the knot.
