Rafael Nadal has confirmed he will not compete at the US Open later this month in a statement on social media.

Nadal, who is a four-time champion at Flushing Meadows, has only played the tournament once since 2019.

The announcement comes just days after Nadal finished competing at the Paris Olympic Games where the Spaniard fell short in both the singles and doubles events.

Nadal will turn his focus towards the Laver Cup in September but the withdrawal now means he will have competed in just one of the four grand slams in 2024.

‘Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open, a place where I have amazing memories,’ the 38-year-old wrote.

‘I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100 per cent this time.

‘Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of luck to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.’

Nadal’s appearance at the Paris Games marked just his seventh tournament of the calendar year.

Having lost to eventual gold medallist Novak Djokovic in the singles, the Spaniard fell in the quarter-finals of the doubles playing alongside fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz.

Afterwards, Nadal dropped a huge hint that he is closing in on retirement when he suggested he may have played for the last time on the iconic Philippe Chatrier court.

‘It is time to rest, to take some time and in a few days to assess everything that has happened during these months and to figure out what I really want,’ he later added when speaking to Spanish outlet IB3.

The 2024 US Open runs from August 26 to September 8.
