We might be two-thirds of the way through 2024, but that doesn’t mean the year isn’t still jam-packed with lots of cracking TV to offer.
2024 has already given us Baby Reindeer, House of the Dragon, The Gentlemen, Fallout, One Day, 3 Body Problem, Shogun, The Traitors, and more – and there’s still loads of great TV left to see.
We’ve got the return of three of Netflix’s biggest series, including Heartstopper and American Murder, we’re returning to Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and the biggest British reality series’ are back.
But fans will most likely be excited for the big comeback of Squid Game – the hit Netflix series that took over TV in 2021 and left viewers begging for more.
There’s also a brand new season of Only Murders in the Building set to arrive on Disney Plus.

And we can’t forget that both Strictly Come Dancing and The Great British Bake Off are returning as they continue to be two of the UK’s longest-running reality series.
Here’s everything you need to know about the best TV shows coming to streaming services in the autumn and winter of 2024.
American Murder: Laci Peterson
Up first is American Murder: Laci Peterson, which is the second edition of the Netflix true crime show that first looked at the Watts Family Murders in 2020.
The new season, which comes to Netflix on August 14, 2024, will look back at the murder of Laci Peterson, who was killed in December 2002 after going missing from her home in California.
Her husband Scott Lee Peterson was convicted of her murder and initially sentenced to death, but later had this reduced to a life sentence – however, Peterson still protests his innocence to this day.
The case became widely known as millions followed the story, with numerous documentaries made over the years – this Netflix series will feature interviews with Laci’s family members.

Only Murders in the Building
If you fancy your true crime with more of a comedic and satirical twist, catch up with Only Murders in the Building on Disney Plus ahead of its fourth season.
Season four, which drops on August 27, 2024, will once again star Selena Gomez alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short as three amateur detectives and podcast hosts attempting to solve yet another murder in their New York City neighbourhood.
Meryl Streep joined the main cast in season three alongside Paul Rudd, with several celebrities – including Amy Schumer, Sting, and Jimmy Fallon – appearing in cameo roles.
Each season has 10 episodes and has received widespread critical acclaim in America and in the UK, due to the chemistry of the main cast and the intrigue of each mystery they solve.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Let’s be honest, things could have probably gone better for the Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power which was hailed as the ‘most expensive TV show ever made’ back when it debuted in 2022.
Fans had mixed reactions to the prequel series – set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movie trilogy – and the series lost almost 66% of its audience between its first episode and season finale.
But with production having left New Zealand for the UK, and with viewers still willing to give the series a chance, there’s hope yet for the TV series as it heads into its second season.
New episodes drop on Amazon Prime Video on August 29, 2024.
Strictly Come Dancing
If you’re in the mood for reality TV shows this autumn, where else could be better than the BBC and Strictly Come Dancing? Once again, a group of celebs will take to the floor and fight it out for the coveted Strictly trophy.
So far this year, the likes of X Factor winner Shayne Ward, Love Island’s Tasha Ghouri, and 80s popstar Toyah Willcox have signed up for the dancing competition that puts big names to the test.
No start date has been officially confirmed yet but for over a decade now (2020’s Covid-affected series aside) the first episode has gone out either on the last Saturday or the penultimate Saturday of September.
So mark down September 21 or September 28 in your diary and wait for the most popular dancing series to come back. Last year’s champion was Coronation Street’s Ellie Leach.

The Great British Bake Off
Get your Paul Hollywood handshake counters at the ready – The Great British Bake Off will be coming back to Channel 4 in just a few short weeks.
The baking competition has launched midway through September every year for the last four seasons, so expect the line-up of avid bakers to be announced soon as we prepare for another year at Welford Park.
Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond will remain on presenting duties for this 15th season of the baking show, while Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith will continue to bring their expertise in the tent.

Heartstopper
Hearstopper lived up to its name with a stellar first two seasons, following the story of Charlie and Nick, who realise they have feelings for each other but feel different social pressures and have different experiences of their sexuality.
Based on the graphic novels of the same name by Alice Oseman, Charlie and Nick are played by Joe Locke and Kit Connor. The series also stars Yasmine Finney who appeared as Rose Noble in the latest reboot of Doctor Who.
The series began in 2022 with a first season consisting of eight episodes – it went down a storm with viewers and critics, and Netflix renewed it for another season which was broadcast in 2023.
New episodes will hit Netflix on October 3.
Squid Game 2
If you watched TV at all in 2021, during those dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic, you almost definitely watched Squid Game, the thriller that saw one hundred people competing for a cash prize in a bloody competition based on playground games.
The Korean drama took the entire planet by storm three years ago Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun attempted to survive the deadly challenges and take on the leaders of the eponymous game.
Initial projections had Squid Game 2 down to greet us in the early weeks of 2025, but instead, we’re going to be getting it earlier than planned: Boxing Day 2024.
