The Switch 2 might need less time to charge (Nintendo)

A new rumour has hinted at the power of the Nintendo Switch successor, with claims it will have a fan and a 60W charger.

With Nintendo promising it will announce the follow-up to the Switch before April 2025, that leaves roughly seven more months of speculation around the console.

There’s already been a wealth of reports indicating it will be an ‘iterative’ improvement over its predecessor, with magnetic Joy-Cons, an 8-inch LCD screen, backwards compatibility, and stronger third-party support.

The most uncertain detail, however, is exactly how powerful it will be, with some comparing it to an Xbox Series S, while others have said it will be less powerful than a PlayStation 4 in terms of technical specifications.

A new rumour, while not drilling into the power of the console itself, has suggested it will be a more taxing system in terms of its power output.

According to shipment data shared between manufacturers (via Famiboards), references were found to a 60W AC adapter charger from Delta Electronics. This is the same company who supplied the 36W USB-C charger for the current Nintendo Switch.

It’s speculated this could mean the console will support ‘fast-charge’ functionality if it adopts GaN (gallium nitride) technology, which is used in chargers for mobile phones to allow for improved efficiency.

For comparison, the Steam Deck has a 45W charger, although it will be three years old in 2025, so the comparison isn’t entirely fair.

As reported by Portuguese site UniversoNintendo, it seems the Switch will have two fan coolers instead of one, based on the same manufacturing sources.

There’s no indication of what the fans will be used for, with some fans speculating that one will be in the dock. Either way though, that suggests a significantly more powerful console than the original, that requires much more effort to cool down.

The current Switch models only have one internal fan and none in the dock, so changing that arrangement also risks increasing the amount of noise generated by the console.

While Nintendo has not confirmed any details about its next console, manufacturing sources are usually the most reliable when it comes to new hardware, since they don’t rely on random leakers.

Despite the anticipation for the next Switch, Nintendo isn’t slowing down support for the original console – with Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership all set to come out in 2024.
