PlayStation Portal
The PlayStation Portal is proving very popular (Sony)

The PlayStation Portal has outsold every other peripheral and controller in the UK during July, as EA Sports FC 24 tops the game charts.

While the amount of new games usually dries up in the summer, this past month has been more quiet than usual.

This is reflected in the UK sales chart for July, with the only new title being EA Sports College Football 25 which debuted at number seven.

The best-selling game of July was EA Sports FC 24, which saw a spike in sales thanks to the Euros. According to Gfk data, which tracks all physical and digital sales from most major publishers, EA Sports FC 24 sold 46% more copies in July than FIFA 23 during the same period last year.

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, meanwhile, re-entered the chart at number six thanks to the launch of the new Dawntrail expansion.

As pointed out by GamesIndustry.biz, the top six games were all released prior to this year, in what is a pretty bleak reflection of the 2024 release slate so far.

Sales of PC and consoles games in the UK overall fell by 2.9% compared with the same period last year, with 2.35 million games sold.

On the hardware side, console sales dropped 22% over the previous month, which is also a 30% drop over the same period last year. The PlayStation 5 remains the best-selling console, but sales declined by 31% over the previous month.

The Nintendo Switch was behind with a 9% drop in sales, while the Xbox Series X/S is in third position after a 19% sales decline.

The PlayStation 5 recently surpassed four million sales in the UK, although it hit this milestone 31 weeks slower than the PlayStation 4.

None of that is much of a surprise but what is, is the fact that the best-selling accessory of the month was the PlayStation Portal. Usually it’s a controller of some sort (the standard white DualSense was the second best-selling), although the results are skewed because they’re reported by revenue and not until sales.

At £199.99 the PlayStation Portal is not cheap, but despite the lack of marketing by Sony word-of-mouth on the device, which can stream PlayStation 5 games remotely, has been consistently good.

It’s also been the number one or two best-selling accessory in the US since its launch last November, except on a few occasions when it’s been sold out. In terms of unit sales it’s the eleventh best-selling accessory this year.

EA is set to launch EA Sports FC 25 on September 27, which sees England’s Jude Bellingham on the cover.
