GTA 6 was never going to be cheap to make (Rockstar Games)

Leaks suggest that the initial cost of GTA 6 could be $2 billion, making it the most expensive video game ever made.

As exciting as the GTA 6 trailer was last December, in the end it didn’t reveal much about the game that either hadn’t been leaked beforehand or wasn’t something you could easily have guessed at (like the graphics being amazing).

So far, the leaks have been generally quite accurate, with things like the dual protagonists (including their names) and the Vice City setting having been know about for months in advance.

The most accurate details have come from the infamous Rockstar hack and this also includes an estimate of how much the game is costing to make: a staggering $2 billion.

Whether that figure is right or wrong Rockstar Games, and owner Take-Two, are never likely to confirm the exact amount, but previous estimates have put the price of GTA 5’s development at $265 million.

That instantly becomes blurred though, once you take into account the two remasters so far and the fact that GTA Online has been getting constant updates over the course of the last decade.

$2 billion would be far more than any known game, with Spider-Man 2 believed to be one of the most expensive of recent times, with a budget in excess of $300 million.

Considering the fact that GTA 6 is not only a follow-up to the most successful video game of all time but also a live service title, the price tag almost becomes irrelevant. Especially as GTA 5 made $1 billion within just three days from launch.

It is still just a rumour though and part of a compilation of known and leaked information compiled by GTA 6 Countdown, which suggests that the game has been in development since 2014 and that the second trailer will be out later this year.

That you could’ve just guess at, but it’s also suggested that the map is twice the site of GTA 5 and will expand over time with new DLC. Although at the start there will supposedly be three major cities, four smaller cities, and three islands – inspired by Cuba and the Bahamas.

Since the fictional state of Leonida is based on Florida, it will supposed also include a NASA style space centre called SERA and a Disney World parody called Fairyland.

Returning locations from the original Vice City will supposedly include Malibu Club, Ocean View Hotel, Little Haiti, and Leaf Links.

There have been plenty of more outrageous rumours that haven’t panned out so far but the above all seem pretty believable, although some things – like the number of cities – are probably subject to change and some elements could be delayed and added as DLC.

Although Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will be out in 2025 there’s no indication of exactly when, although most rumours point to an autumn release.
