Manchester United have dropped a major hint about signing a midfielder in the final fortnight of the transfer window.

The Red Devils have spent around £150m to recruit Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui so far this summer.

The club are walking a financial fair play tightrope and have offloaded Mason Greenwood, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Willy Kambwala to offset the arrivals.

But Erik ten Hag is not done in the transfer window, with the Dutchman keen to sign a new midfielder.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte was a priority target but the French club are demanding £51m, which is a fee considered too high by United.

Burnley’s Sander Berge has also been considered, with the Clarets seeking around £30m for the Norwegian.

One cost-effective alternative being considered by the club was securing Sofyan Amrabat on another season-long loan deal.

The Moroccan joined United on deadline day last summer and made 30 appearances in all competitions.

While United rejected the chance to sign Amrabat on a permanent basis, the Moroccan was still listed on United’s website until Wednesday.

That’s when Amrabat was removed, as De Ligt took the Moroccan’s number four shirt number.

Amrabat is no longer listed, suggesting United will not re-sign the 27-year-old.

Though Ugarte remains the priority, PSG will have to lower their asking price or accept a season-long loan deal in order for United to resurrect a move.

United open their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Old Trafford on Friday night.
