Nearby residents have been told to keep their windows and doors shut after a huge blaze at a scrapyard in Red Lodge, Suffolk.

The fire at a metal scrapyard in Red Lodge 13 miles west of Bury St Edmunds sparked a massive emergency response at the site in Suffolk.

Plumes of thick black smoke was seen billowing into the air as scrap went up in flames.

The incident was first reported shortly before 6pm tonight, and eleven fire engines rushed to the site on The Carrops, Red Lodge.

People took to social media as the spotted the plume of smoke against the blue sky from the A14.

Hours after the fire was first reported, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the scrap is ‘continuing to burn.’

It said: ‘9pm – with scrap continuing to burn, crews are are still on scene firefighting. They will be at the incident throughout the night and into tomorrow (Saturday).

‘A change in wind direction means that residents of Red Lodge are advised to keep windows and doors closed.’
