DAS VILLAIN I was introduced to MONO a little over 15 years ago with a guy I befriended (and eventually regularly hooked up with, at the time). I was blown away with their 2004 album Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined (recorded by the late Steve Albini...RIP) and been a fan since! Their latest release, OATH (also recorded by Steve Albini), continues in their dichotomous exploration of the light vs. dark/hope vs despair/life vs death, but more atmospheric and sparce. Favorite track: Run On.

Matt Takas This is one of the most beautiful albums I've heard in a very long time. From start to finish, it takes you on a journey that is deeply resonant within the soul. It does no good to pick apart it's technicality and you miss the point. If you listen with your heart and your body, that is where the magic lies. Bravo, Mono, Bravo! Thank you so very much for this absolute gem of an album. Can't wait to see you all in person to hear some of this beauty created with my own eyes. Favorite track: Hear the Wind Sing.
Robbie

Robbie I cannot choose a favourite song off this album; the entire album is excellent start-to-finish and I think it may well end up being my favourite release this year. It's atmospheric and contemplative, and leaves you with a sense of peace afterwards.

about

“What are we doing here?”

The year 2020 turned what was once quintessential late-night stoner existentialism into a daily mantra for nearly everyone on this planet. What are we doing with our limited time in this life? What is our purpose? What should we be doing?

For the past 25 years, MONO have explored themes such as the relationship between darkness and light; hope in the face of disaster; and the duality of birth and death. On their 12th full-length album, OATH, they ponder the time that makes up life, and how to make the most of that time.

Recorded and mixed with longtime friend and collaborator, Steve Albini, OATH opens like a sunrise with a slowly ascending orchestra and brass section, the full band taking its time to revel in the atmosphere before joining in the splendor. Throughout the album’s 71-minute runtime, MONO meditates on that theme of time and life in myriad ways. The unhurried evolution of a song that is a hallmark of MONO’s catalog is infused with an air of elegance that elevates OATH to new heights.

MONO challenged themselves with a universally relatable existential examination, and answered with OATH, an album that offers benevolent reflection rather than fleeting respite.

“We live with a vow that hasn’t changed since we were children. Hear the wind sing. We are part of the universe. We already know what we should do and what the most important thing in life is.” – Takaakira ‘Taka’ Goto, MONO
