🌍UN International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies🌍 Today, the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) stands proudly with the global community to celebrate the #UNInternationalDayofCleanAirforBlueSkies. Clean air is essential for a sustainable future, safeguarding both our planet and its people. 🌱 #REMPEC reaffirms its commitment to continue working with the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention to reducing air pollution in the Mediterranean region. On this day, #REMPEC highlights a significant milestone in the fight against air pollution: the Mediterranean Sea SOx Emission Control Area (#SECA), set to come into effective implementation on 1 May 2025. 🚢 This crucial step will drastically reduce sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions from ships, improving air quality and protecting public health across the #Mediterraneanregion. By limiting sulphur content in marine fuels, we are paving the way for cleaner, healthier #BlueSkiesForAll in the #Mediterranean. As we move towards the effective entry into force in 2025, #REMPEC remains committed to supporting stakeholders in the implementation of this initiative for a sustainable, pollution-free future. The implementation of a #SOxECA will be a milestone in our journey to achieve #BlueSkiesForAll ,improving air quality and protecting both the environment and public health. Together, we can make a tangible impact, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier future for the #Mediterranean and beyond. Let’s continue working towards a sustainable, pollution-free region! 🌱💧 Let’s work together for a cleaner, greener future! 💧🌊 #UNCleanAirDay #CleanAirForBlueSkies #SOxECA #1May2025 #AirQuality #Mediterranean #Sustainability #REMPEC #BlueSkiesForAll #AirQuality International Maritime Organization UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention

About us
The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) is administered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in cooperation with the United-Nations Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP). Established in 1976 by the decision of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution (the Barcelona Convention of 1976), REMPEC’s mandate is historically to strengthen the capacities of coastal States in the Mediterranean region and to facilitate co-operation among them in order to combat massive marine pollution by oil, particularly by developing national capacities to combat oil pollution and by establishing a regional information system with a view to dealing with marine pollution emergencies. The Centre’s mandate was extended over the years in conformity with the decisions of the Contracting Parties with a view to addressing relevant emerging issues and the respective global developments with a particular focus on preventive measures against pollution from ships. In 2001, with a view to the adoption of the new Protocol concerning Cooperation in Preventing Pollution from Ships and, in Cases of Emergency, combating Pollution of the Mediterranean Sea (Prevention and Emergency Protocol, 2002), the Contracting Parties reaffirmed the involvement of the Centre in activities related to prevention of, preparedness for and response to marine pollution.

HAPPENING NOW: IMO TRAINING COURSE ON OIL POLLUTION PREPAREDENESS, RESPONSE AND COOPERATION LEVEL 3 (STRATEGIC) in Lebanon (online)📄🌊 The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) in close co-operation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Lebanon Petroleum Administration (LPA), is currently holding an online Training Course on Oil pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation Level 3 (Strategic). The course is financed by the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP). The Online course gathered over 20 participants from various competent authorities in Lebanon, with the aim to provide senior managers and administrators with a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved in managing oil spills of national significance. It also addresses the numerous, often conflicting challenges that may be encountered during such events. In recognizing the importance of the ratification and effective implementation of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation 1990 (OPRC 90) to prompt effective action and minimize the damage which may result in the event of an oil pollution incident, the IMO has developed the OPRC-HNS Model Training Courses in order to assist its Member States in their efforts to build national capacity in preparing for and responding to Oil Spill incidents. The implementation of the OPRC Convention training-related issues are referred to in its article 6, where Parties undertake to establish programmes to train relevant personnel in oil spill preparedness and response for the four levels of response training: Level (0): Awareness Level, level (1) First Responders (Operational), level (2): Supervisors and On-Scene Commanders (Tactical), and Level (3): Administrators and Senior Managers (Strategic). #oilpollutionresponse #training #capacitybuilding #OPRC #Mediterraneansea #REMPEC International Maritime Organization UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention
