Already embodying the band’s penchant for jangly pop (“Old Flame”) and hard-hitting emotional drama (“No Cars Go”), Arcade Fire’s first release, Arcade Fire EP, pointed clearly to their skyward trajectory right around the corner. The art-rock intuition of “I’m Sleeping in a Submarine” showed a group of rock musicians who were already composing complex and sensuous tracks, while the anthemic guitar and bass lines of “Headlights Look Like Diamonds” ached for stadiums to be played in.
