The acoustic strumming that kicks off the album-opening “Gold Lion” is unequivocal: Show Your Bones is no repeat of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ debut. They haven’t grown up, exactly; “Fancy” is a headbanging showcase of Karen O’s fiercest screech. But elsewhere they’ve turned down the volume and opened up their sound, touching on streamlined noise pop on “Way Out” and cowgirl blues on “Sweets”. “Cheated Hearts”, meanwhile, is a bittersweet masterpiece that frames its broken heart in bright, ringing guitars.
