Just three weeks ago, we officially launched the CREATOR Building. Professor Henry Mwandumba’s words continue to ring true: "As we journey towards #Malawi2063, we will continue to meaningfully deliver towards that vision. We know that full realisation of that vision requires a healthy population. Only healthy farmers can farm on the #megafarms. Only healthy men and women can mine our precious natural resources. Why is the CREATOR important for Malawi and the region? Partnering with the Malawi Government through the Ministries of Health, Education, and other ministries, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) has had exceptional successes in high impact translational research addressing Malawi and global health priorities, influencing Malaria, Typhoid, HIV, Pneumonia, Diarrhea and Tuberculosis prevention, and treatment policies. The CREATOR building offers MLW more resources and state-of-the-art equipment to address the existing and emerging health issues. Professor Stephen Gordon explains further on what the future holds for MLW and beyond. PRESS RELEASE ON CREATOR LAUNCH CREATOR promises to revolutionize health research in Malawi and the region, increasing the scale and quality of research endeavors while enriching postgraduate specialist education within the country. Over the years MLW and its core partners, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), The University of Liverpool (UoL), and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) have nurtured researchers through various academic levels: Pre-Masters, Masters, Pre-PhD, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral levels. With the CREATOR building, this training pipeline will be scaled up as more training opportunities will be created. What is in The CREATOR? The Innovation Hub and Postgraduate Library in the CREATOR Building will be housed on the first floor. When a project idea is born, partners can take this to the Library to scope and explore the potential, and then to the Innovation Hub to map out the plan. Watch as Dr Alice T. What a journey it has been! We look back to the beginning and proudly look forward to the launch of CREATOR in just a few weeks. “25 years ago, there were only 4 researchers in MLW, now we have a lot more researchers, spread across over 100 active projects. We are without doubt the biggest research institution in Malawi. We have seen massive reductions in the death rate from malaria among children, we’ve seen a huge increase in vaccination, we’ve seen the arrival of HIV diagnosis and antiretroviral therapy, and we’ve seen the life expectancy of Malawians go from 45 years to 60 years.
