Lilly Alfonso - The Designer

Lilly Alfonso is a Malawian fashion designer, CEO & Founder of an eponymous fashion and design brand. Becoming a fashion designer in a country where fashion is still in its infancy; where access to fashion and design school is almost impossible; and having no one to guide her, she went against all odds to acquire international recognition. She is twice awarded as an international fashion designer in Cairo, Egypt, for two consecutive years, and awarded Malawi's living legend, among other distinctions. The famous designer's creations have been on numerous international fashion shows, such as Cairo, Kuala Lumpur, Paris, London, and Sydney. Her work has been recognized and featured on CNN, BBC, and VOA to share with the rest of the world.

She is also a motivational speaker and has been featured at numerous conferences across Africa to share her entrepreneurial and fashion journey. Lilly Alfonso works with a number of fashion designers, musicians, actors, and other artists in the creative industry both in Africa and around the world.

Lilly Alfonso believes that not everyone has to go through what she went through. She believes this can be achieved through pride in her African identity and heritage; embracing diversity and the power of collaborations. Inclusion will also accelerate access to information and knowledge, thus creating a sustainable way for Africans around the world. Through her 100-year initiative, she has given her apprentices platforms to perform and showcase their talents. She believes that talent can be passed down for the next 100 years, from generation to generation, thus ensuring sustainability. Fashion pioneers must be able to give aspirants access to information and knowledge. What started in her country,

AWARDS

She won her debut award in 2010 at the Fashion Malawi Edition (FAME) as the best designer. In 2019 & 2020, she received the International Fashion Designer Award in Cairo for her contribution to the fashion and design industry in Africa. She was also awarded the Fashion Living Legend Award at the UMP awards 2019 in her home country. In 2022, at the Pan African Women Empowerment Summit (PAWES) held in Zanzibar, Tanzania, she was recognized with an award as one of the Most Influential Women in Fashion and Beauty by the Tanzanian Government.
