Drawing inspiration by the Guachichil tradition, in which the ashes of the deceased were thrown into the air, Bodegas del Viento’s cabins reinterpret this custom through a light structure that blends in with the mountain. The architecture is defined by a gabled roof that follows the slope of the land and responds to the local climate by allowing the rain and strong winds characteristic of the area to pass through. In addition, its irregular geometry ensures privacy by closing off the rear and directing views to the front, where the highest point reaches 7 meters. The interior, delimited only by a stone basement anchored to the ground, offers a free plan with a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The topography and architecture create a dialogue that invites the visitor to connect with the natural environment. #SordoMadaleno

#SMTALKS To celebrate World Photography Day, we welcomed Mexican photographer Rafael Gamo to our Mexico City office. During an enlightening conversation, he shared with the Sordo Madaleno team his experiences photographing architecture and art around the world, offering a distinctive perspective on his craft. Rafael also visited the historical archive of the Sordo Madaleno Foundation, with the interest of studying the original negatives of Armando Salas Portugal and Guillermo Zamora, analyzing how the photographs were taken, focusing on the technical and artistic processes that these photographers used to capture the essence of the works designed by Juan Sordo Madaleno between the 1940s and 1960s, such as Monterrey and Álvaro Obregón, Lerma 333-335, Reforma and Morelos, and the Hotel María Isabel. #SordoMadaleno #WorldPhotographyDay #DailyLife #ArchitectureOffice #RafaelGamo #Photography

Aligned and integrated with the vines, the visual perception of the new Bodegas del Viento winery changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed. In some moments it blends in with the terrain, in others it appears as a natural extension of the landscape. Strategically located in the center of the plot, the winery was designed to respect the layout of the vines, every 2.50 meters. This modular design resulted in eight walls that extend from northeast to southwest, organizing the program into five naves connected by a central patio. The structure is complemented by a system of beams and vaults that allow for large windows without intermediate supports, framing views of the mountains and vineyards. #SordoMadaleno #architecture #sketching #arquitectura

Nestled in Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental, the master plan for Bodegas del Viento is designed to embrace the site’s unique culture and community while enhancing the connection between people and their natural environment. Strategically located between the communities of Huachichil, Arteaga and Saltillo, the master plan proposes a balanced mix of residential, commercial, hospitality and expansion of the existing winery. #SordoMadaleno #urban #masterplanning #architecture

At the center of the Akumal building lies the ‘Oculus,’ a 12-meter diameter circular space that offers a connection to the sky and brings natural light into the heart of the project. This lobby seamlessly fosters a serene transition from the city exterior to a triple height rotunda with water features and verdant plantings. It connects to complex amenities and gardens, sparking curiosity to explore the building’s diverse spaces, and interplay of light and shadow. Moreover, the integration of public spaces and amenities interspersed within the intersecting volumes enhance the living experience of its residents, promoting social interaction and well-being. The conceptual foundation of Akumal is built upon three core elements: topography, panoramic views, and the residential context, all of which shape its architecture and underscore its commitment to enhancing a harmonious, environmentally friendly living environment. Its formal language is materialized through the alignment of two main axes, which govern the configuration and orientation of symmetrical curved structures. This geometric arrangement, forming a cross and ascending across three distinct blocks, results in a total of eight stories, with an additional setback floor. This volumetric design facilitates optimal city views, ample natural light, ventilation, and generous green spaces. Thank you, Architects’ Journal, for this enlightening interview and for the opportunity to discuss our work. “Materiality is linked to our architecture because materiality is always linked to a place. So, deciding the materiality of a project is not taken in isolation but comes out of the specific situation and context – where certain materials may have proved successful over the years”.
