Through his academic programs, he has collaborated with The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, Ikea’s Home Smart division, and other NGOs and institutions.

For meeting the criteria of being a designer that develops as a transcendent icon, that is an active member of the national industry, that stands as a visionary creator, is habitus builder, community generator, change agent and whose work is valued as paradigm of excellence, Mexican designer José de la O has won the 2022 MDF Designer of the Year award, presented by Rimowa.

The jury formed by Lourdes Baez, Hector Rivero Borrell, Liliana Ovalle (MDF Designer of the Year 2021) and president Grisell Villasana, opted for this decision after deliberating on three final nominations.
His trajectory as a thinker in the prospective of design from the dynamics of speculative reflection, propped up not only in the most widespread endeavor of the discipline, but also in research and writing, with products that, aside from symbolic goods, stand out as educational, curatorial and editorial projects, was one of the aspects that, according to Grisell Villasana, prevailed in the decision. The president of the jury pointed out that the verdict meets MDF Mexico Design Fair’s general objectives to find new voices, new ways of being a designer and new forms of expression whose approach discomforts and awakens a status quo that still does not recognize that the imaginary of the average person is already in another time-space.
In addition to the recognition of his peers for owning a profile that fully projects the skills and reflections desirable in a Mexican designer, the winner is entitled to the development of a project linked to the academic and professional, with institutions and brands allied to MDF.
