Another one for the books! We organised a Nusa Chambers Hangout (the first of many!) last Friday and it was an absolute blast 🎉 Nusa members Amy Seow, Wen Juin Lim, Rachel Low, and Too Xing Ji were in KL last week to connect with some Malaysian law firms and lawyers. To wrap up the week in style, we hosted #NusaHangout001 with 30 awesome young Malaysian disputes practitioners joining the fun. We made new connections, great conversations, and most importantly, had lots of fun - it was a night to remember. If you’d like to dive into the experience, just follow Chambers Lab and Nusa Chambers to get first dibs on our upcoming events! 😉 #ChambersLab #NusaChambers #YoungLawyers #LegalCommunity

🎉 What a night! Huge thanks to everyone who joined us for #NusaHangout001! 🎉 Our members who visited KL last week had a blast getting to know some of the bright young disputes practitioners in town. Guests fully immersed themselves in our Nusantara-inspired drinks, spread of local delights, with fun and games at our townhouse venue. We received raving reviews about our icebreaker game – Nusa Bingo; it all started the moment guests walked through the door. They were tasked to gather clues through conversations and their own investigative smarts with friends and complete strangers to win the Nusa Bingo game. Some dove right in, asking the right questions to complete their bingo cards, while others teamed up to share answers straight up and increase their chances of winning together. (Ahem... You know who you are! 😏) Our top 3 bingo champs who each took home a bottle of Sarawakian tuak! 🏆 #Congratulations The rest of the night was spent on conversations (both the serious and the fun types), karaoke, and pool. We shared #nostalgic packets of chicken/prawn cracker snacks, specially-curated cocktails prepared by our mixologist, accompanied by rounds of hearty laughter, celebrative cheers, and the occasional friendly heckle. On behalf of #NusaChambers members Too Xing Ji, Rachel Low, Wen Juin Lim and Amy Seow, thanks again for making our first hangout event such a hit! Along with Chambers Lab and David Grief International Consultancy, we hope to host another event like this again soon – wherever it may be! Psst... Don’t forget to share your pics and tag us @Nusa Chambers! 📸✨

The first half of the year has been a whirlwind, and we have already achieved many milestones. 👣 The best part is, we’re just getting started! 🇻🇳 In March, Chambers Lab and David Grief had a fruitful trip to Vietnam where they got to participate in a discussion on international arbitration and legal dispute management and meet with the Vietnamese legal community.  🖥️ April saw the exciting launch of the first Asia-centric virtual chambers, Nusa Chambers. Ji En Lee was also in Tokyo to speak at the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA). 🇯🇵 🗣️ May was particularly eventful with our inaugural #DimsumDialogue at ICCA 2024 Hong Kong 🇭🇰 and the ‘Wrestling with Arbitration Problems’ Tylney Hall-style event in Singapore. 🇸🇬 Adeline Chin YF was also a panelist on the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Evening Talk Series on Strategic Considerations and Technological Innovations in International Construction Arbitrations in Southeast Asia.  Finally, we bid farewell to our office space at #AIAC and moved to WORQ @ Sunway Putra Mall last month. It is a paradigm shift, working in a bustling co-working space compared to an international arbitration centre in a beautiful heritage building. #newvibes These events would not have been possible without the dedication and efforts of the Chambers Lab team. A big thank you to our team, and to our clients – our heartfelt appreciation for your trust and unwavering support. Let’s continue to make the rest of the year remarkable! 💪 #ChambersLab #InternationalArbitration #InnovationInLaw #ICCA2024 #IPBA #NusaChambers

International Arbitration Partner at Stephenson Harwood LLP

A follow-up on an excellent International Arbitration gathering last week at the Stephenson Harwood LLP Singapore offices. A great venue to "wrestle" with arbitration problems, with Christopher Moger KC keeping his panellists Sarah Grimmer, Steven Y. H. Lim and myself under control and on track. Although debate of procedural efficiency perhaps a little undermined by getting through only about three and a half of the ten topics slated for debate, the audience was in fine spirits as we headed into the drinks' reception! Thanks must go to the Chambers Lab and Stephenson Harwood LLP teams who seamlessly brought the event to life, in particular Ji En Lee, Adeline Chin YF, Carinn Tan, Marilyn Quek, Joanna Woon, Vanessa Wu and Brandon Adam Joseph. And last but by no means least, a special mention to David Grief! #InternationalArbitration #ChambersLab #DavidGrief #Debate #ChathamHouseRules #Singapore #TheMarina #SHDisputes

On Day 3 (final day) of #DimsumDialogue, participants from Table 1 had an animated discussion concerning the role of cultural experts in arbitrations to aid arbitrators in understanding the cultural nuances underlying disputes. The discussion also touched on the importance of impartiality in #arbitration across cultures, emphasising the need for arbitrators to maintain neutrality despite personal friendships and cultural obligations. Despite cultural differences, there was a unanimous consensus that the integrity of impartiality and the commitment to resolving disputes remain largely unaffected by personal connections. 🤝 We would like to thank Karen Petch for moderating Table 1 on Day 3 of Dimsum Dialogue, and for sharing these key insights with us. We are sure that the attendees which included Gourab Banerji SA, Sitpah Selvaratnam, Eun Young Park, Andrew Rigden Green FCIArb FHKIArb FSIArb, Yi-Shun Teoh, and Charles Allen FCIArb have brought significant value to the conversation. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts below! 👇 Thank you once again to everyone who participated in Dimsum Dialogue. We look forward to more events like this in the future and hope to have you join us again! ✨ #DimsumDialogueDiscussions #ICCA2024 #InternationalArbitration #LegalPractice #Culture #ConversationalLeadership

We were delighted to have Violet Huang Qianwei moderate one of the tables at our recent #DimsumDialogue event at #ICCA2024. Thank you for contributing your time and sharing your perspective after attending our event! 😀    Violet's post perfectly encapsulates our mission at Chambers Lab and Nusa Chambers: It is about leveraging innovation to foster connections and create a platform where we can bring distinctive and impactful value to the legal community, especially in #arbitration and #internationaldisputes.

While you are a junior lawyer, having breakfast with top arbitration practitioners from all over the world seemed like an impossible thing (amongst other impossible things). But it did happen during the #DimsumDialogue hosted by Chambers Lab and David Grief International Consultancy! As a moderator for the table, I had the opportunity to speak to top arbitration practitioners based in Hong Kong, UK, and Dubai about the latest trends and developments in the arbitration scene. In a charming vintage cafe lined with old movie posters, we also discussed the pros and cons of memorial style versus pleadings style arbitration. The conversations, like the food, were free-flowing and refreshing. Big thanks to the DGIC & Chambers Lab team for putting this together! P.S.: Very happy to be the first member of the newly launched Nusa Chambers to attend ICCA 2024 Hong Kong! I shared about the virtual chambers with some of the people I’ve met and many were generous with their advice on practicing as an independent in the arbitration scene.

During Day 2 of #DimsumDialogue, some of our guests discussed whether tribunals are hindered by fear of procedural fairness objections. Some key points of the discussion included:    ⏰  𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: - Guests shared their experiences about parties causing significant delays, sometimes strategically, thus extending the arbitration process.   - For example, the broad interpretation of public policy in award challenges in India led to tribunals often allowing new evidence and submissions well beyond the appropriate timeframe.      ⏰  𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬: - Some arbitrators with heavy caseloads may struggle to stay on top of procedural matters, potentially lacking the confidence to be firm with non-compliant parties. Our guests have made a few suggestions:   - For arbitrators to disclose their caseloads and potential conflicts of interest.   - For there to be deadlines for rendering awards in procedural orders to ensure timely resolutions.     ⏰  Expedited Arbitration:  - Pre-dispute agreements on expedited timelines, and raised the potential of disputes turning problematic if the complexity of the dispute makes the timeframe unmanageable.   - Some of the arbitrators also recounted instances where the expedited arbitration process was completed quickly, but the rendering of the award took longer than anticipated. Thank you, Jesse Kennedy for moderating Table 2 on Day 2 of Dimsum Dialogue and sharing a detailed takeaway of the conversation with us. The contributions from Benjamin Hughes, Ben Giaretta FCIArb CArb, Dr Anna Kirk, Sanjeev Kapoor Partner, Khaitan and Co, and Christopher Bailey have enhanced the discussion. We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. At our recent #DimsumDialogue, one of the topics that guests on 5th May (Day 1) delved into was the issue of expert witnesses often acting as hired guns in arbitrations. The Tea 🍵 We heard from one of the moderators of the day, Jennifer Lim, who shared some takeaways from the discussion with guests at Table 2 including Gourab Banerji SA, Robert S. Pé, Truong (Ryan) Le, Brenda Horrigan, and James Hosking on the topic. The guests shared their insights, agreeing that while expert testimony can be beneficial, its overuse can sometimes hinder #arbitration #proceedings. There was discussion for stricter measures to be put in place by tribunals and counsel, such as limiting each subject to one #expertwitness in Procedural Order No. 1 and requiring experts to agree on a common bundle of documents on which they would rely in forming their expert conclusions. The consensus was that both tribunals and counsel should exercise greater control and discretion when utilising expert witnesses. What are your thoughts on this issue? Leave a comment below and let’s talk about it 👇 Stay tuned as we share more interesting #DimsumDialogueDiscussion topics to keep the conversations going! #ICCA2024 #LegalPractice #Tribunals #ProceduralOrder #LegalInsights #ConversationalLeadership

Thank you, Clemency Wang (王楚宁), for leading such a deliciously insightful session on the first day of #DimsumDialogue! We are thrilled to hear that your table had some thought-provoking discussions over the good food at Lang's Cafe. Let's keep these conversations brewing! 🥢

Had a great week at ICCA 2024 Hong Kong, and kick-started it by moderating a small dimsum chat with esteemed folks Naing Oo Minn, Lauren Lindsay, Duncan Bagshaw, Jeremy Chenoweth and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab C.Arb, FCIArb. Over siew mai and chee cheong fun, we discussed flavorful topics such as: 1) Expert witnesses have proliferated and many act as hired guns. What should we do? 2) Cultural differences in international arbitration 3) Diversity and its impact on decision-making 4) AI and the role / expectations of arbitrators Thank you David Grief and Chambers Lab for cooking this up! #dimsumdialogue

To those who joined our ‘Wrestling with Arbitration Problems’ Tylney Hall-style event – thank you for spending your Tuesday evening with us! 💬    With over 30 people in attendance, we were thrilled to see such strong participation and engaging discussions. This event would not have been possible without the valuable insights from our speakers Christopher Moger KC, Christopher Bailey, Sarah Grimmer, and Steven Y. H. Lim. Special thanks also to Stephenson Harwood LLP (Singapore) Alliance for providing the venue and refreshments!  We trust that everyone had ample opportunities to network and connect with both new and familiar faces after the session. 🤝 Until next time!  #ChambersLab #DGIC #WrestlingwithArbitrationProblems
