DIY gingerbread village! This is the post you have all been waiting for. You all went nuts on Instagram about it and today I am sharing all the details of my Pottery Barn inspired Christmas village. The Pottery Barn villages have been selling out and they only have the small size left. As you know, I love to go thrifting and when I saw some outdated Christmas village houses, I knew immediately what I would do with them! Please read this post in it’s entirety as I have all the links at the bottom of this post to the exact products I used.
DIY GINGERBREAD VILLAGE-
Aren’t they the cutest? Not only are they cute, but you will save so much money with my version. This is a fun craft to do with a girlfriend or your family. I recently just made some with my mom and hers turned out so cute! You really can’t mess these up. In fact if your “snow” drips, it looks all the more realistic!
Instructions-
Go thrifting and look for these Christmas village houses! I didn’t pay more than $10 per house, and I bought A LOT! Don’t have time to go looking? I have got you covered. I linked to some affordable ones at the bottom of this post! Once home, dust them off if needed, then give 3 light coats of spray paint. This spray paint is THE PERFECT color to mimic gingerbread! I tested several colors and this one was the winner by far! Exact spray paint linked at the bottom of this post. Once dry, bring indoors and warm up that hot glue gun. You will need white hot glue, also linked at the bottom of this post. Protect your surface {a few paper towels should do} and get to work “piping” your houses!
A FEW TIPS-
These houses all come with raised detail and typically snowy roofs. Look back at my thrifted house and you can see the snow on the roof, the raised areas like the window casings and door jams, etc. These are the parts you want to highlight with the white hot glue. Once done with those areas, stand back and see where more snow might be appropriate. The top of the chimney? The more “snow” the merrier. When I was doing this project with my mom we concluded the houses with the more “snow” look better than the ones without. Adding “snow” around the bases seemed to look best also. You can not only go over the raised detail, but add your own dots, flourishes, and details.
WHERE TO DISPLAY-
You can put these anywhere! The most logical place for me was the kitchen. Since these are supposed to mimic real gingerbread it seemed like the logical choice. However, you can place these on shelves in your living room, on a console table, on your dining table, etc. Have fun with it! Many of these little houses come with lights as well and they look darling lit up at night! I will get a shot of them at night and share on my Instagram! Please pin these images to your DIY or Christmas boards to share with everyone, and so you can easily reference back! Here are the supplies I used as promised, as well as some gingerbread villages.

I love how these turned out so much. Doodling gingerbread design is addicting, I did it last year on cardboard and couldn’t stop. Now I’ll be looking for ceramic houses 😉 Such a great idea!
