The Ovinjange Community Project, in the Kunene region recently received a significant donation of N$88,713 from August 26 Logistics as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm, “Chains of Kindness”. The Ovinjange Community Project was established under the Omiti Planting CC non-profit organisation to tackle water scarcity and food insecurity, which have been long-standing challenges in the Ovinjange village, approximately 11 km from Opuwo. It is a collaborative effort led by two academics, Rui Tyitende and Dr. Ellison Tjirera, from the University of Namibia, who aim to bring positive change and alleviate the suffering in their community through this project. Tyitende, head of organisational and strategic initiatives at Omiti Planting CC, said, "Instead of criticising the government for not doing enough, find a way of using your skills to contribute." The direct beneficiaries of this project are the people of Ovinjange village. The lack of water has severely impacted their livelihoods. The project's first phase will provide access to a reliable water source, giving residents access to clean water for personal and livestock consumption. The second phase will establish a community garden. This garden will enable the community to grow crops, provide food security, and generate income by cultivating cash crops. Acting managing director of August 26 Logistics (Pty) Ltd, Alpha Nekomba highlighted the importance of the company's CSR program. Report: Josephine Kakola

Director of railway systems at the International Union of Railways (UIC), Christian Chavanel says the UIC continues to support African countries in modernising their railway infrastructure. This, he said, will ultimately improve safety standards and enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. The director was speaking during a public lecture titled 'The International Union of Railways (UIC): An Added-Value for the Development of Railways in Africa' hosted by the The International University of Management (IUM) last week. He further elaborated the significant role that the UIC plays in the development of railway systems in Africa by providing a platform for intergovernmental collaboration, knowledge sharing and the implementation of international best practices in the railway sector. “Through its initiatives, the UIC continues to support African countries in modernising their railway infrastructure, ultimately improving safety standards and enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness,” said Chavanel. Chavanel further added that the UIC continues to make a substantial contribution to the expansion and integration of rail networks across the continent by facilitating access to technical expertise, innovative technologies and international funding opportunities. The added value has the potential to enable African nations to build sustainable railway transportation systems that promote economic growth, regional connectivity and socio-economic development on the continent. The public lecture provided useful insights on the development of railway systems in Africa, using the UIC as an enabler for this development. The public lecture concluded with an information sharing session on the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) which was led by the Chairperson, Prisca Mayumbelo (CMILT) .
