Namibia's decision to cull 640 antelope in national parks and 83 elephants outside parks (total 723 animals) is a reasonable decision in terms of wildlife management and drought relief. In this article, we explain the necessary context that shows that culling animals is normal practice during droughts, while the timing of the cull coincides with increasing food insecurity in rural areas. Those trying to hurt Namibia's tourism industry during this time of crisis should take a closer look at their motivations. Full article: https://lnkd.in/dEDFmbJH

Namibia's community fisheries reserves offer a ray of hope in an otherwise dire situation for freshwater fisheries in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. Community fisheries reserves have been ably supported by the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), including transferring their knowledge and experience to other KAZA countries under the ECOFISH Programme. NNF hosted this critically important workshop to allow communities, scientists and government officials to reflect on their knowledge of the problem and find solutions to depleted fish stocks. As you will find out in the article below, the loss of fish poses real dangers to the local communities that depend on this resource. Urgent action is needed! https://lnkd.in/dVfgYn-R

Lion Rangers work hard to monitor and conserve the desert-adapted lions in north-western Namibia. Their recent adoption of SMART technology to help track their efforts reveals that over 18 months they: Recorded 12,002 patrols across the northwest – 8,889 of which were on foot, with an average foot patrol of 9.2 km covered in 3.3 hours; Spent 50,065 hours patrolling 279,854 km, of which 87,678 km were covered on foot; Recorded 445 lion sightings and 876 lion tracks. Keep up the good work! Find out more about their efforts here: Article by: Mathilde B. https://lnkd.in/dWBX_BHK

Warning for Namibia's hydrogen ambitions: there are very few buyers for this product! Because hydrogen is difficult to transport, projects that are most likely to succeed are located close to the end users. The plans in the Tsau //Khaeb are 1000s of kilometres from the hoped-for end users in Germany! Further, if they aren't willing to buy due to cost, they will be less willing to buy when they realise that this project will produce red hydrogen that threatens our biodiversity. https://lnkd.in/d-88feNf

Fascinating archaeological study in the Namib sand sea. While totally inhospitable today, it wasn't always this way. https://lnkd.in/dCqA68vg
African archaeology has neglected Namibia’s deserts, but scientists now know when an ancient lake supported human life in the Namib Sand Sea

Counting lions in the massive Kunene Region is like finding needles in a haystack! Four teams of 45 surveyors covered thousands of kilometres in search of the desert-adapted lions. Each lion can be identified uniquely using its whisker spots, allowing a complete count of 57-60 lions. Read all about it here: https://lnkd.in/eeTftVjn
