The USAID-funded West Africa Trade & Investment Hub Project (hereinafter referred to as the Trade Hub) is a five-year, $140 million trade and investment facilitation activity that seeks to improve private sector competitiveness in West Africa through a market-based approach. By working in partnership with the private sector and fostering co-investments, the project will generate new private-sector capital investment into key sectors to create jobs and increase trade between the U.S. and West Africa, including through increased utilization of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The project comprises of three main components: 1. Design and administration of a Co-Investment Fund for private sector partnerships, including a portion for partnerships in Research and Development (R&D) towards innovating and modernizing practices in Nigeria across five targeted value chains; 2. Technical assistance (TA) that directly supports, coordinates, and engages with qualifying recipients (i.e., partners and grantees) to achieve USAID’s trade and food security objectives; 3. Urgently respond to the secondary economic impacts of COVID-19, notably to 1) increase access of working capital with financial actors, 2) prevent and mitigate job losses, and 3) help respond to local and regional supply chain disruptions and shortages of critical medical supplies and services as well as for agricultural inputs and food staples. Through this Co-Investment Fund and technical assistance, the Trade Hub will improve companies’ abilities to expand business operations, increase productivity, and create jobs that build on the talents and aspirations of West Africa’s growing population. 🌟 Excited to share another milestone achieved by the USAID West Africa Trade & Investment Hub! 🌟 On June 19, 2024, we celebrated the inauguration of the new cashew processing plant in Bassékodougo, Odienné, demonstrating the power of collaboration and regional development. 🚀 Key Highlights: • Annual Capacity: 15,000 tons • Funding: $800,000 from Trade Hub & $13.6 million from EcoCajou • Impact: $7.8 million in revenue, $3.57 million in exports, 1,142 jobs created, Support to 5,487 cashew producers. Under the theme “Together for a Sustainable and Responsible Cashew Sector in Kabadougou,” this project enhances EcoCajou’s processing capabilities and empowers local youth with valuable skills. It is a significant step towards sustainability and stronger regional ties. Her Excellency Jessica Davis Ba, U.S. Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire, highlighted the transformative impact of this initiative as a model of sustainable and inclusive development. Since 2019, the Trade Hub has catalyzed private sector investments in Côte d'Ivoire, awarding $4.45 million in co-investment grants to five companies. These grants have generated $45.7 million in new private investments, $24.9 million in export revenues, and created 2,200 jobs, benefiting over 20,000 producers in various value chains. 🎉 Trade Hub Learning Event & Biosene's New Industrial Unit Inauguration 🎉 May 23, 2024, was a landmark day for our Trade Hub team and our partners committed to promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Senegal. As the moderator of the Capitalization Workshop organized by the USAID West Africa Trade & Investment Hub, I had the honor of participating in a pivotal event at the Azalaï Hotel Dakar. Over 80 participants attended in person, with additional online attendees, all exchanging valuable insights on co-investment strategies, SME support, blended finance, and the promotion of social and gender inclusion. Key Highlights: $9.1 million in co-investment grants awarded to 12 Senegalese companies $39.7 million in investments generated 4,343 jobs created and 24,946 smallholder farmers involved Inspiring speeches by Ms. Alyssa Leggoe, USAID Senegal Mission Director, Ms. Aminata Mbaye (Trade Hub), and Ms. Jouldée Soumare (Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Cooperation) highlighted the profound impact of co-investments and blended finance, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for economic development.
