True I agree that value is very important, knowing the value of your role and it’s worth in the market helps you to negotiate well. However, one thing that a lot of people also forget is the capacity of their employer to pay them exactly what their role is worth or even close to it. So you want to also be very aware of your employer’s ability to pay you and sustain that pay for good period. If you have done that assessment and you have good understanding of the numbers, then you can negotiate, but always put yourself in a position of strength meaning that you must be valuable to them. If you’re not valuable, they can as well let you go if you are asking for too much. So be that exceptional guy.

In my experience, I have seen that timing does matter. It may just be a bad time generally and no matter how much you talk about it. You may not get positive results. I absolutely agree to knowing your value. That’s where confidence comes in. If you are ever going to speak to your employer because you feel undervalued, you must have facts to defend it. Data and documented achievements to back you up. People are advised to keep a brag book, it helps in times like this.
