Despite July being wet and cool, Dutch summers are warming up overall, with 2023 being the hottest year ever, including in Amsterdam. Many homes aren't built for the heat, so are tenants turning to air conditioning to cool down? If they are, this could impact the overall temperature in the city. 👏🏼 Two of our Principal Investigators, Gert-Jan Steeneveld (Associate Professor of Meteorology at Wageningen University & Research) and Andy van den Dobbelsteen (Sustainability Lead at Delft University of Technology), explain what air conditioning may do to the city's temperature on NPO Start and NPO 2's "Wat houdt ons tegen?"! MSc MADE research forms a huge portion of our impact in tackling Amsterdam’s pressing urban challenges. Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) - a joint degree from Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research - is housed within the AMS Institute building on the Marineterrein Amsterdam, and the ‘urban engineers’ in training forge close links with our work via Living Labs, experiments, and more. To address challenges such as climate change, water and raw material scarcity, and energy demands, it's crucial to make Amsterdam's infrastructure—bridges, quay walls, and pavements—circular and emission-free. We’ve been busy working on this as part of the National Growth Fund: Future-proof Living Environment program, in which we are collaborating with a range of partners to assist the City of Amsterdam in maintaining civil infrastructure, much of which needs renovation or replacement in the coming years, in a #sustainable way. 🧠 Over 130 partners are collaborating on 60 initiatives, using a 200 million euro budget. What are the most and least favorable low-car measures in Amsterdam – according to locals? As Amsterdam pursues a lower-car future, new Delft University of Technology and AMS Institute research investigates what 400 Amsterdammers really think about different low-car urban interventions and considers how Amsterdam and other global cities can best encourage the move to lower car cities. 🚗 The research, ‘Mind the Gap: A comparative study of low-car policy acceptance’ by Anastasia (Natasa) Roukouni and Oded Cats, is available here: https://lnkd.in/exXsmKZn 👉🏼 Overall, Amsterdammers are positive about most low-car measures and policies. 16 out of 28 proposed low-car measures have a majority of residents in favor, indicating net support (see the first visual)! 👉🏼 What is striking, however, is that Amsterdam residents have widely differing opinions about reducing car use (see the second visual), with some strongly in favor of and against different measures. 👉🏼 These findings suggest that a one-size-fits-all approach to promoting low-car environments might not be effective. 🌟 The researchers made a selection of recommendations for Amsterdam and other cities to help them achieve a smooth rollout of low-car measures. Our diverse group of Research Fellows (mostly) from our partner universities hails from different backgrounds—Rural Sociology, Urban Engineering, Plant Science and more—and work on various projects to tackle Amsterdam's urban challenges. 🧠 Research Fellows enhance the scientific integrity of AMS Institute, aiding research and education initiatives by sharing academic insights with the Research and Innovation teams and making active contributions to MSc MADE. 💭 The group has grown and diversified, making this summer the perfect moment to head to Otterlo for a summer retreat immersed in nature and with the quality time to address questions such as: 🌷 How can we support each other in interdisciplinary research? 🌷 Can we do projects together and learn from each other? 🌷 How can we maximize the potential of the community and ecosystem, including the mother universities, the Principal Investigators, the municipality, industry, and more? The time also made space for bonding and creating memories, as Roberto Carlos Márquez Estrada, Research Fellow at the MIT Senseable City Lab, notes: "Personally, the memory that will stay with me is the experience of food prepping with other colleagues. There's nothing better than cooking and eating together to enhance your management skills and show others that you care for them." While Erkinai Derkenbaeva, PhD Candidate at WUR and AMS Research fellow, noted that the retreat "is essential to strengthening the community of diverse researchers.
