At AMS Institute we design solutions for urban challenges and educate tomorrow’s engineers.
Over ons
Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) is a collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, Delft University of Technology, the City of Amsterdam. Launched in 2013, AMS Institute is a young public-private institute based in Amsterdam. Situated at the nexus between industry, government and academia, our mission is to free intelligence from its ivory tower and let it out into the world where it can do something useful. Aiming to solve problems in metropolitan areas, we combine brainpower, data and knowledge from the fields of design, planning, life sciences, engineering, physics, mathematics, information technology and social sciences. Through facilitating and initiating (research)projects that ‘fix’ things we create practical solutions, products, businesses activity and workable plans that benefit urban progress.

Despite July being wet and cool, Dutch summers are warming up overall, with 2023 being the hottest year ever, including in Amsterdam. Many homes aren't built for the heat, so are tenants turning to air conditioning to cool down? If they are, this could impact the overall temperature in the city. 👏🏼 Two of our Principal Investigators, Gert-Jan Steeneveld (Associate Professor of Meteorology at Wageningen University & Research) and Andy van den Dobbelsteen (Sustainability Lead at Delft University of Technology), explain what air conditioning may do to the city's temperature on NPO Start and NPO 2's "Wat houdt ons tegen?"! The topic? “Cooler zonder Airco”. ☀️ In "Wat houdt ons tegen?", writer and journalist Jeroen Smit and climate journalists Jaap Tielbeke and Daphné Dupont-Nivet delve into the world of major climate-related topics. 👉🏼 Read more about the show here on Omroep Human: https://lnkd.in/euZ4zRjG 👉🏼 Watch on NPO: https://lnkd.in/euQRfENn 👉🏼 Or read more about some of Gert-Jan's recent research here: https://lnkd.in/ewmHyc36

MSc MADE research forms a huge portion of our impact in tackling Amsterdam’s pressing urban challenges. Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) - a joint degree from Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research - is housed within the AMS Institute building on the Marineterrein Amsterdam, and the ‘urban engineers’ in training forge close links with our work via Living Labs, experiments, and more. With #Amsterdam as a Living Lab, students are connected to real-world challenges in the city and work alongside researchers, the City of Amsterdam, businesses, and others. 💥 The slider below highlights two brilliant pieces of research from MSc MADE students: 🌟 Jonas van der Ham’s circular economy research explores how biobased materials, such as straw and #hemp, can be used as low-carbon alternatives in building insulation materials. 🌟 Matias Cardoso Suter’s Mobility research into the ‘walkability’ of Amsterdam assesses different streets in the city, and the results are featured in a dashboard that the Municipality uses. 🌟 Check back next week for more student research highlights! 💭 Are you a student interested in pushing boundaries in practice and science and motivated to work on hands-on projects? Then read more about MSc MADE here: https://lnkd.in/ekuftwWa 👉🏼 Want to learn more about AMS Institute’s impact, from students to startups? To address challenges such as climate change, water and raw material scarcity, and energy demands, it's crucial to make Amsterdam's infrastructure—bridges, quay walls, and pavements—circular and emission-free. We’ve been busy working on this as part of the National Growth Fund: Future-proof Living Environment program, in which we are collaborating with a range of partners to assist the City of Amsterdam in maintaining civil infrastructure, much of which needs renovation or replacement in the coming years, in a #sustainable way. 🧠 Over 130 partners are collaborating on 60 initiatives, using a 200 million euro budget. As the program lead and owner of the Living Lab Learning Environment work package, AMS Institute coordinates and drives collaboration, focusing on innovations and scientific validation. 👉🏼 Read more about the overall program here: https://lnkd.in/eMyhqzMR Here's a glimpse of some of the work we've done so far: 🛠️ We aim to use circular innovations in 10% of replacement and renovation contracts, such as for pavements. These will include circular material use approaches such as cement-less concrete (Geopolymer) or low-temperature asphalt (LEAB), and encouraging a high rate of reuse for materials. Read more about the research underpinning these approaches here: https://lnkd.in/eS8BgKyG 🛠️ Piloting an 'emission-free construction site' with KWS Infra and the City of Amsterdam. What are the most and least favorable low-car measures in Amsterdam – according to locals? As Amsterdam pursues a lower-car future, new Delft University of Technology and AMS Institute research investigates what 400 Amsterdammers really think about different low-car urban interventions and considers how Amsterdam and other global cities can best encourage the move to lower car cities. 🚗 The research, ‘Mind the Gap: A comparative study of low-car policy acceptance’ by Anastasia (Natasa) Roukouni and Oded Cats, is available here: https://lnkd.in/exXsmKZn 👉🏼 Overall, Amsterdammers are positive about most low-car measures and policies. 16 out of 28 proposed low-car measures have a majority of residents in favor, indicating net support (see the first visual)! 👉🏼 What is striking, however, is that Amsterdam residents have widely differing opinions about reducing car use (see the second visual), with some strongly in favor of and against different measures. 👉🏼 These findings suggest that a one-size-fits-all approach to promoting low-car environments might not be effective. 🌟 The researchers made a selection of recommendations for Amsterdam and other cities to help them achieve a smooth rollout of low-car measures. Do you want to gain more insight into how the lifespan of business IT hardware can be extended? The RePlanIT project has developed research-based prototypes and will discuss the applications in practice during an upcoming webinar. 📍 Webinar 'RePlanIT: Showcasing Impact Measurement Research', with Menno van Dijk of AMS Institute, Menno van Leeuwen of Zirrow, and Anelia Kurteva of Delft University of Technology. 🗓 Wednesday, July 3rd, from 11:00 to 12:00 💻 Sign up: https://lnkd.in/eGvUFqrM 🎧 Language: English The RePlanIT project started from the observation that business IT hardware is only used for three to four years. This is not sustainable, especially in combination with the ongoing digitization of business processes. The pressure on the environment, CO2 emissions (including embodied energy) and the supply risks for our digital infrastructure are increasing. The digital transition competes with the energy transition for critical metals. It is well known that we can reduce the demand for IT hardware if we can keep the existing hardware in use for longer. RePlanIT has created research-based prototypes that allow IT decision-makers to quantify and leverage this enormous potential. During this webinar, we will discuss how the research and prototypes developed during the RePlanIT project are already being applied in practice. Be there, get inspired and ask all your questions to the speakers! 💥 Read more about the program in this article: https://lnkd.in/ehkjRncp Nationale Coalitie Duurzame Digitalisering Aliter Networks Circular IT group IDEAL&CO
