Amsterdam Neuroscience: connecting the people, the science and the brain.
Over ons
Amsterdam Neuroscience is the research institute for neuroscience of Amsterdam UMC and the science faculties of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. Researchers and clinicians from these three institutions join forces in the field of fundamental, translational and clinical brain research. This collaboration strengthens the scientific excellence in this area, making Amsterdam Neuroscience one of the largest neuroscience communities in Europe. To enable translational neuroscience research, we develop and translate neuroscience knowledge into applications for patients. Amsterdam Neuroscience focuses on scientific excellence, young talent and innovation in four cross-disciplinary research programs. In addition, there are five clinical research programs that focus on both existing and new treatments for a number of brain and nervous system diseases, including neurological, neurovascular and psychiatric disorders. Amsterdam Neuroscience’s overall mission is to broaden the fundamental knowledge of the human brain and nervous system, and to translate this into effective therapies and treatments for the individual patient.

🎉 Today Amsterdam UMC launched a major national campaign for ADORE in collaboration with the ‘VriendenLoterij’, KWF Kankerbestrijding, Hersenstichting and Stichting MS Research. ADORE will be the largest onco-neuro campus in the world, with over 2,000 researchers from Amsterdam UMC - Cancer Center Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC - Amsterdam Neuroscience joining forces. They have one common goal: effective, personalized treatment, for every patient. By working together, they aim to achieve breakthroughs that will more quickly help people with cancer and brain diseases such as dementia and MS. Geert Kazemier (Oncological Surgeon) and Everard (Jort) Vijverberg (Neurologist) are the General Directors of ADORE, and Maarten Bijlsma (Scientific Director of Cancer Center Amsterdam) and Guus Smit (Chairman of Board of Directors of Amsterdam Neuroscience) are both engaged as Scientific Directors of ADORE. We asked Guus Smit four questions regarding ADORE, which you can find on our website. Amsterdam UMC – MS Centrum Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC - Alzheimercentrum Amsterdam

Amsterdam Neuroscience researchers Hein van Marle and Christa van der Heijden provide the first proof of principle that reactivating therapeutically altered traumatic memories during sleep may enhance treatment effects in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Their study has been published in Current Biology. Read about their findings on our website:

🚴♀️ An inspirational bike ride. On Saturday, June 8, a Dutch and Belgian team successfully biked the European Million Dollar Bike Ride, a fundraising event to raise money for research into STXBP1-related disorders. Together they raised more than 12.000 euros. The teams consisted of researchers and clinicians from the Functional Genomics department of VU Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC Genetica of Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam Neuroscience, Radboudumc, Universiteit Antwerpen, and Antwerp University Hospital, as well as family members of STXBP1 patients. Each team biked more than eighty kilometers to the mid-point in Dordrecht, halfway between the labs of Amsterdam and Antwerp.
