We are an Amsterdam-based global NGO supporting community-led urban change through cycling.

Over ons

We are an Amsterdam-based global NGO guided by the belief that bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world. We envision an urban future in which half of city trips are by bicycle by the end of the decade. To help achieve this, we facilitate the development of bicycle cultures in cities across the world, striving towards this bold vision that we call 50x30.

We are pleased to share the successful completion of the third edition of our TandEm Women in Cycling programme, in partnership with EIT Urban Mobility. This year, 11 dedicated women from 10 cities across 8 countries completed their training and have since organised women’s cycling courses in their local communities, positively impacting 50 women. The programme’s impact speaks volumes: - 90% of participants now feel more confident riding a bicycle, a significant increase from 50% before the programme. - Over 70% are now using bicycles for daily transportation needs like work, school, and groceries, compared to 40% previously. - 90% have reported significant benefits from increased cycling, including time and cost savings, improved health, and new income opportunities. A few reflections from those involved: - Juliana from Brussels shared, “Seeing a beginner student pedal for the first time, and her pride in wanting to teach her children, was incredibly fulfilling. Her determination and courage have been major motivators for me.”    - Jaspreet from Berlin shared, “The course boosted my self-confidence and made me believe that I can use a bicycle to reach the places I want to go.” Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this programme a success. Stay tuned for more updates on TandEm 2025 later this year!

🚴♀️ I am honoured to share that I have successfully completed the Tandem Women in Cycling program! 🚴♀️ This incredible initiative, developed by EIT Urban Mobility and BYCS, is designed to empower women to become community leaders in promoting cycling. Through a blend of online courses, an in-person training weekend in Brussels, and a collaborative two-month project, I had the opportunity to learn, share, and grow alongside ten inspiring women from across the EU. With a strong belief that bicycling is not just for health and exercise purposes, sustainable mode of transportation, but as a symbol of freedom and inclusivity. This program helped us address barriers such as not knowing how to ride or feeling unsafe in urban environments. The highlights of the program were meeting all the participants and learning from their diverse experiences. I admired each of their motivations. Watching Women Don’t Cycle by Manon Brulard was particularly impactful, teaching me valuable lessons on breaking free from prejudices and biases. The pure joy I felt when the first student started pedalling on her own was indescribable. Overall, it was a fulfilling and humbling experience, simultaneously empowering and motivational. A big shout out to Carolina Cominotti, Julienne Chen, Alex Baum and Samuel Babjak Jr. and ProVelo for organising the whole program so meticulously. Empowering women, one pedal at a time! 🚲💪 #Cycling #WomenInCycling #Sustainability #CommunityEmpowerment #ProjectManagement #EITUrbanMobility #BYCS This experience has honed several key skills: 📣 Content Creation and communication 🤝 Community Engagement & Networking 📊 Project Management & Implementation 🌟 Empathy & Advocacy

Over the past month, I've had the incredible opportunity to work on an exciting new edition of #Perspectives, focused on Cycling Through Connecting. Perspectives is a series of interviews and a space for knowledge sharing that explores urban issues intersecting with the bicycle. In addition to writing an editorial, I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing three inspirational individuals. Filip Watteeuw, Deputy Mayor of the City Of Ghent, shared insights into the transformative journey of Ghent's circulation plan whilst overcoming significant backlash. Cyprine Odada, Executive Director of Critical Mass Nairobi, and a vital voice for women in cycling, shared her inspiring story of turning Critical Mass Nairobi into one of Africa's largest non-competitive cycling movements. Sarah Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cycling UK, has powerfully shifted the narrative around cycling through her compelling storytelling and positive framing. I am thrilled to share more about these powerful stories and insights with you in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

🤝🏼 BYCS and Cities for Better Health (formerly ‘Cities Changing Diabetes’) are thrilled to announce our new partnership focused on increasing the use of cycling for better health among children. Establishing healthy physical activity habits like cycling during childhood can have immediate and long-term benefits on children’s physical and mental wellbeing. Nevertheless, physical inactivity among children is rising, and it is important to enable more children to take part in daily activities. Our first project together in this partnership will focus on increasing cycling amongst children in vulnerable communities in #Bogota and #Bratislava, with a third city to be confirmed later this summer. We will work with local, on-the-ground partners to develop and implement a range of initiatives aimed at introducing and establishing cycling as a regular option and activity amongst children. Novo Nordisk’s Cities for Better Health programme and BYCS aim to bridge the gap between health and mobility sectors, showcasing cycling’s role in promoting physical activity and well-being while emphasising its health benefits. 🚲 Interested in learning more? PhD Fellow at Urban Cycling Institute | Bicycle Mayor of Tehran at BYCS | Ph.D. Candidate in Urban Studies |

Excited to share that I will be presenting at two sessions during Velo-city 2024! 🚲🌟 In the "Connecting People and Communities" session on Tuesday, I'll be presenting on how to build inclusive cycling communities through educating, networking, and advocating in socio-politically challenging contexts. I'll share insights from my experiences as the Bicycle Mayor of Tehran at BYCS and PhD Fellow at the Urban Cycling Institute, focusing on promoting cycling through bottom-up initiatives. During the "Dutch Cycling Embassy: Connecting Through Cycling" session on Wednesday, as the recipient of the Dutch Cycling Embassy scholarship, I'm honored to discuss the importance of strengthening the human infrastructure of cycling in Tehran. It couldn’t have happened without DCE’s backing, especially the support from Shelley Bontje, Chris Bruntlett, Maud de Vries, Skadi Tirpak, and Annika Peveril.
