This book is a timely and urgent call to prioritise people and nature over commerce and profits. We need to measure natural capital on-farm - as well as off it 🚜🌿 Congratulations to our partner in Western Australia, Perth NRM for recently completing a groundbreaking natural capital accounting project. After 3 years, 15,000km traveled, 20,000ha covered, and 645 surveys conducted across 20 farms, the completion of this project marks a significant contribution towards establishing an agreed-to NCA framework to measure and monitor on-farm natural capital. The work carried out throughout this project provides strong evidence for further investment in this space - helping to boost sustainable farming in this region and beyond. Huge congrats to Perth NRM! Did you know that more than half of all life on Earth lives underground? Yet, every year 24B tonnes of fertile soil is degraded due to intensive agriculture... From fungi and plants, to bacteria and insects, and more, this out-of-sight realm beneath our feet is the world's most species-rich habitat. 🪱🐛🦠 But here's the catch - while soil is the bedrock of life, we're not giving it the love it deserves. More than 1/3 of the planet's liveable land is degraded and every year a staggering 24 billion tonnes of fertile soil is lost due to intensive agriculture. Green GOLD! Always believe in your soil. 🪱 Since 2012, John D Liu's documentary Green Gold: Regreening the Desert, has been showing people what landscape restoration makes possible. It asks the question: "If we know how to restore landscapes, why don't we just do it?!" This landmark film demonstrated to new audiences that within one generation: - We CAN transform degraded areas into thriving landscapes. - With the right techniques, we can restore the functioning of ecosystems. - Barren environments can become places worth living in again. For many people working in the landscape restoration space, watching Green Gold was the trigger that inspired a career change. A BEE-AUTIFUL SLEEPING SPOT! 🐝 Did you know that male bumblebees rarely spend the night in their nests? On their quest for food and a mate, they often wander far from home. Without shelter, they find a cozy spot to rest by curling up on a warm flower, often in funny positions where they can easily sip on nectar. Here are some more adorable and fascinating facts about bumblebees: 🌷 When they’re short on pollen, bumblebees “bite” the leaves of plants, which can speed up flowering by 15 to 30 days. 🍭 Bumblebees prefer to gather pollen from sugar-rich nectar flowers, even if they’re harder to reach, rather than opting for less sugary but more easily accessible nectar. 🐝 When a bumblebee touches a flower, it changes the plant’s electrical potential for several minutes. As George Lamb says, “That’s your contact point with the natural world. Two to three times you’re eating stuff that comes out the ground.” And yet, the more we disconnect from nature, the harder it is for many of us to see - and feel - the link. Wildfarmed works to reconnect people with the food chain and understand where their food comes from.
