If you're an educator talking about nature, at school, at a zoo/aquarium or elsewhere, have a look at the European Nature Protection Toolkit! 👀 💚 Produced by the @European Commission and available in all 🇪🇺 languages, this document provides resources for understanding why nature is so crucial, finding and recognising the 🌳 plants, 🐞 animals and habitats that surround us. Focusing on Europe’s shared natural heritage, it will help you introduce the notions that underpin environmental science, such as 🌱 What's biodiversity? 🦊 What is a species? 🏞 What's a habitat? • 🌍 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆! The EAZA Ex situ Programme (EEP) for Northern bald ibis and many EAZA Members have been supporting the Waldrapp team for decades. 💪 Together, they have resettled populations of these Endangered birds north of the Alps, in Europe. They have established breeding colonies using human-led migration. Now, they aim to develop the population until it's self-sustaining. 🇮🇹 Northern bald ibises winter in Tuscany (Italy). There are still many losses due to illegal bird hunting and electrocution caused by unsecured middle-current electric pylons. Measures are taken within the project to fight these threats. 🤩 Check out the beautiful pictures from the 2nd human-led migration that started on 13 August and is heading to Andalusia (Spain)! • 🎤 Meet our #ProudZooPerson of the day: 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗺, Educator at Magdeburg Zoo in Germany! 🇩🇪 “In my childhood I spent a lot of time at the zoo and was fascinated by the huge diversity of animals. After studying biology, I started working as a zoo educator. For the last 5 years, I have also been working as an education advisor for the EAZA Parrot Taxon Advisory Group. 🦜 😃 I am proud to be able to pass on my enthusiasm for nature to our zoo guests. These unique moments that we create for the children open them up to conservation and sustainability. 🌎 When you meet them again and they proudly tell you what they do to protect nature is always a special moment for me. 👪 As a member of the zoo community, I always have the feeling of being part of a big family. I can always turn to colleagues for help and advice. 🤝 When you meet colleagues at conferences or visit their zoos, you always receive a warm welcome and it's as if you've just seen them just recently. There are also small and big challenges of course but I see them as new experiences that allow me to grow, especially when it comes to zoo visitors who are not convinced of the zoo concept. 🤔 I don't always manage to convince every sceptic of the great work of zoos and aquariums do, but that only motivates me to work even harder and explain more about the importance of zoos. 💚 Zoos are great places to connect with nature and experience the diversity of animals with all your senses. Building this emotional bond between our guests and the animals is one of our great opportunities to motivate them towards a more sustainable way of life.” Thanks for sharing, Stephan! 👏 . . 📢 Do you want to be our next Proud Zoo/Aquarium Person or to nominate your favourite colleague? These small deer are the most ancient representatives of early ruminants. Lesser chevrotains are found in forests in Southeast Asia and are fascinating in many ways! 🔎 🧛 For starters, the males have « fangs »: these sharp, tusk-like canines come in handy when they fight. 🥁 Despite having tiny feet, they rapidly beat their hooves on the ground – creating a drum roll – when they are alarmed. 🐣 Their diet is composed of fruits and leaves of over 40 plant species, but there is a suspicion that these ungulates sometimes feed on young birds… 🩺Have you heard that they can be effectively trained for voluntarily walking into a transport crate or for medical check ups? Find out more interesting facts in the BPG that contain comprehensive and up-to-date information to best care for these animals. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g6c6nhY! Sadly they are all also under threat of extinction. 🤝 Action Indonesia is an international collaboration working together to conserve these species using the One Plan Approach. They combining the skills and resources of experts within and outside of the global zoo community to achieve stable and secure populations for these animals through commonly agreed goals. In 2015, conservationists at Chester Zoo (UK), alongside IUCN SSC Specialist Groups, other international zoos, conservationists, academics, the Indonesian government, joined forces to achieve greater conservation impact through the Action Indonesia Global Species Management Plans (GSMPs). 💪 Now over 50 organisations have joined Action Indonesia. EAZA Members* support the movement by 🔎 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: in Alas Purwo National Park, Javan banteng populations are being monitored to assess their density, their evolution through time and the habitats they use. 🎓 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝘆: ~350 practitioners from Indonesian zoos and conservation institutions have now received training in these areas through Action Indonesia! 📣 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀: for the 6th year, Action Indonesia Day (on 11 August) will enable citizens of the world to learn about the 4 Indonesian species through games and other fun activities.
