I am thrilled to announce the publication of my latest research article titled "Applying a 'Medical Deserts' Lens to Cancer Care Services in the North-West Region of Romania from 2009 to 2022 – A Mixed-Methods Analysis", now available in the Archives of Public Health. This study highlights the significant challenges in accessing oncology care within medical deserts, particularly in the North-West Region of Romania. Through a comprehensive mixed-methods approach, we explore the disparities in cancer care, identify gaps, and propose actionable strategies to ensure equitable healthcare access. The 8th webinar of our Sailing to Lisbon 2024 series is titled "Public Health in Action: From Methods to Decisions," and is scheduled for the 7th of October, at 15h CET. This webinar promises to be an enlightening session, offering valuable insights into how the latest advancements in epidemiologic methods and data can both support and challenge decision-making in public health. Public health is a dynamic field, constantly evolving in response to new challenges and opportunities. Decision-makers in public health are often faced with complex choices that must balance scientific evidence, practical constraints, and ethical considerations. In this webinar, our expert speakers will delve into the critical role of health data, modern epidemiologic methods, and robust evidence in shaping public health decisions that have real-world impacts. We will start by an overview of potential data sources to exploit in epidemiological studies and assessments and will then delve into modern time series methods as a way to assess potential public health interventions and public policy. We will end this webinar with a reflection on how existing evidence might be used to support public health planning and decision and existing challenges. The health and wellbeing of children and adolescents in Europe require urgent attention. Today we kick off our series of #RC74 side events with an exciting discussion on improving child and adolescent health across the WHO European Region. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing issues, with the prevalence of mental ill-health doubling to affect 1 in 4 young people under the age of 18. Additionally, 1 in 3 primary school children are now living with overweight or obesity, with alarming rates that keep increasing in the region. Inequities in health outcomes, driven by socioeconomic factors, are rising both within and between countries, while progress in reducing neonatal mortality has stalled in countries in the region. To address these challenges, we're launching the consultation process for a new Child and Adolescent Health and Wellbeing Strategy, developed in collaboration with UNICEF, to strengthen child and adolescent health. This new strategy will be developed through extensive consultation with internal and external stakeholders, including direct participation from children and adolescents. This strategy aims to: ✅ improve health outcomes ✅reduce inequities ✅ensure health systems are equipped to support families and caregivers effectively ✅ provide a comprehensive monitoring framework ✅ ensure all children and adolescents realize their rights to physical, social, and mental health wellbeing Watch this space for more info! Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend my first Summer School on "Systems Thinking and Innovation for the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases and Healthy Ageing Population in the WHO European Region" in beautiful Nice, France, from July 16–19, 2024 organized by WHO Regional Office for Europe, Universite Côte d’Azur and Ulysseus European University. The experience was truly enlightening, bringing together passionate experts and enthusiasts focused on transforming public health, especially in addressing NCDs and ageing. The sessions highlighted the critical need for a holistic approach to tackling NCDs and promoting healthy ageing. The diverse discussions offered fresh perspectives on policy frameworks and innovative strategies crucial for building resilient healthcare systems. Key takeaways included: The importance of integrating systems thinking into public health strategies. Innovative policy levers to mitigate the impact of NCDs. Sustainable healthcare practices to support a healthy ageing population. I am deeply inspired by the knowledge I gained and grateful for the wonderful people I met and reconnected with. Elle est également présidente de l’Association Européenne de Santé Publique (EUPHA 2020-2024) et membre de plusieurs groupes consultatifs de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS), notamment le Groupe Consultatif Technique de l’OMS sur l’introspection comportementale et les sciences au service de la santé et le Conseil consultatif du directeur régional de l’OMS/Europe sur l’innovation dans le domaine des maladies non transmissibles. Elle est diplômée en psychologie clinique à l’UPJS, a obtenu son doctorat en sciences médicales à l’Université de Groningue, aux Pays-Bas, et a suivi une formation postdoctorale à l’Université d’Oxford dans le cadre du programme international de leadership en recherche en soins primaires d’Oxford. Ses intérêts de recherche portent sur les innovations biocomportementales et psychosociales dans la prévention et la gestion des maladies chroniques, les interventions non médicamenteuses, le changement de comportement, l’amélioration de l’état fonctionnel et la qualité de la vie des personnes atteintes d’une maladie chronique et leurs implications pour les soins intégrés. Elle est impliquée dans l’édition universitaire, la supervision d’étudiants au doctorat et l’application des connaissances.
