New research from the University of Exeter, Bath Spa University, and The Australian National University highlights a critical challenge in the fight for gender equality. While ‘Lean In’ messaging aims to empower women by emphasizing resilience, it may inadvertently reduce women’s motivation to protest gender inequality. The study shows that women who engage with ‘Lean In’ ideas may feel less motivated to protest gender inequality—perhaps because they believe bias won’t affect their careers as much. This highlights a critical issue—we need to focus on addressing the root causes of inequality, not just individual resilience. As we tune in to the Olympics, it’s a reminder of how sports can unite and inspire us. It’s also a crucial time to address violence against women and girls (VAWG) in sports. In 2023, UN Women, UNESCO, and the Spotlight Initiative released "Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in Sport: A Handbook for Policy Makers and Sports Practitioners." This guide helps us understand VAWG in sports, provides tools to address it, and suggests ways to collaborate effectively. Why is this so important? Sports shape societal norms about gender, influencing attitudes and behaviors on and off the field. They also have incredible potential to promote gender equality and tackle the root causes of such violence. As we celebrate the spirit of the Olympics, let’s also commit to making all spaces safer and more inclusive for everyone. Addressing VAWG in sports can set a powerful example for combating gender-based violence and harassment everywhere.
