Many news sites have written about this over the past week, so you probably haven't missed it. The beauty industry continues to grow, partly due to the use of User Generated Content and micro-influencers. One trend playing a significant role in this growth is the popularity of micro-niches. More and more UGC creators and micro-influencers are gaining expertise in specific niches and sharing their knowledge with their audience. Take, for instance, @fleurmaxiime, a Skin Therapist who shares skincare tips. Or @mandygiselle, popular on TikTok for discussing perfume ingredients, their scents, and why she recommends certain fragrances. Her followers are even willing to purchase her recommended perfumes without smelling them first. However, legitimate critical questions are being raised about this trend, notably by the Nederlandse Cosmetica Vereniging (NCV). Many beauty products aren't suitable for every age group, and Monica van Ee, chair of the NCV, mentions the difficulty in gaining control over this (NOS, May 6, 2024). It's therefore crucial for brands to know who their content is intended for, as well as understanding the audience of influencers and how they advertise. Influentials has a wealth of data on its platform. This provides the opportunity to examine factors like the age and gender distribution among an influencer's followers. This helps brands act responsibly in terms of who beauty content is targeted towards and enables them to verify if there's a genuine match. The influencer marketing landscape is evolving rapidly. Brands are increasingly recognising the importance of incorporating (micro)influencer marketing and User Generated Content into their ongoing marketing efforts. To support this growth, industry professionalisation is crucial. The influencer marketing committee of the DDMA has taken a significant step in this direction since April 22. Influencers face challenges navigating the complex web of laws and regulations governing their activities. Influencerrules.nl offers a user-friendly platform where influencers can access clear, concise information on transparency and advertising requirements across different channels. At Influentials, we are highly support to the professionalisation of the industry. We will educate influencers on these guidelines and encourage them to seek certification to demonstrate their compliance. Additionally, we urge brands using the platform to familiarise themselves with the rules and integrate them into their campaign briefings.
